'TWO YEARS SUFFERING 'Brought on by a Severs Strain-- How a Cure Was Found. - > Jnt., 18 one of the great host who continually sound the praises of "Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, and he has much reason to do so as they brought him from suffering to health; after he had spent much money and two years of time ex- perimenting with other treatments. 'Mr. Stephens tells his experience as follows: "In the month of Janu- ary, 1908, while working in a log- ging camp at Creston, B.C., I got my back injured. I suffered a great deal of pain and was almost helpless. I tried plasters, think- ing they would help me, but they were of no use. I took several me- dicines, equally without benefit. Then I was advised to try electri- al treatment and did so fora time, but without getting any permanent relief, and it began to look as though I was going to be perman- ently crippled. Then I was advised to undergo treatment with a speci- _ alist at Spokane, Wash. After ex- amining me he said I was in a very bad shape and that the trouble was likely to result in Bright's disease. . However, he told me that he felt sure he could cure me. At a heavy _) expense I was under his treatment _ fox, three months, but did not get the least benefit. Iwas almost in despair; work was plentiful and wages good, but I could not work, as I was quite unable to bend. IT was in this condition for about two years, when my brother, who was with me all the time, came across one of Dr, Williams' pamphlets and read of the great work Dr. Williams' Pink Pills were doing, He urged me to try them, but I thought it would be useless to spend more money after all the other treatment had failed. He insisted, however, and got a dozen Loxes of the Pills and I began to take thei. Before I had used half a aozen boxes I felt relief, and T cuntinesd taking the Pills until every vestige of the pain was gone, and I could raise my hands above my head and then bend until I could touch my toes with my fingers, something _ Thad not been able to do for over two years. My cure was a great surprise to my comrades, and you may be sure I told them what brought it about. I am now as well and strong as any man in the country and I owe it all to Dr. Wil- jiams' Pink Pills." I'm just beating them around a bit trying to teach them that they've got to be nice to me, too."' -------k§--__ --_ A Ready Weapon Against Pain. --There is nothing equal to Dr. Thomas' Eclectric Oil when well rubbed in. It penetrates the tissues and pain disappears before it. There is no known preparation that will reach the spot quicker than this magic Oil. In consequence it ranks first among liniments now offered to the public and is accorded first place among all its competitors. _Sun worship prevailed in the ear- liest times among all nations. niment In the house, ~~ --------- WHAT SHE WILL SAY. Little Willie was playing one day with the girl next door when the latter exclaimed, "Don't you hear your mother calling you? That's three times she's done it. Aren't you going in? Won't she whip oul? "Naw !" exclaimed Willie in disgust. "She ain't goin' to whip nobody. She's got company. A peculiarity of the Hongkong colony is the anomaly of the.men's and women's oceupations"accord- ing to our English ideas. The wo- men work just like the men; they drag huge loads harnessed like horses, carry heavy weights strung over their shoulders as yokels carry milk cans in the country. They stagger up the peak for about 100 yards, when they lay down their burden, go back, pick a new lot up, carry this up to the first dumping place, then take the first load on a few yards further, and so on, all under a blazing sun. All the bricklaying, road mending, coaling, etc., is done equally by both sexes, but perhaps the most curious sight, writes the Hongkong correspondent of the Westminster Gazette, is to see a woman straining at an oar or at the steerage of a sampan, If the boat be a very heavy one two of the women will work an oar together, one pulling one way and the other pushing, while a little baby is perched on the back of each in a sort of cradle or papoose ar- rangement. On the other hand, up on the Peak, which is the European settle- ment, one often sees a Chinese boy walking along sedately PUSHING A PERAMBULATOR, while the English nursemaid walks empty handed by his side and su- perintends operations. Of course all the housework is done by "'bhoys.'? The next point is the very cosmo- politan nature of the place. This was most forcibly borne in upon me the other day when I was walking with an American on one side and an Australian on the other, Justin front of us were a couple of Ger- mans, a Parsee stood at the door of his shop, a Japanese girl followed by two Portuguese boys passed us, and a moment later a rickshaw went by in which sat a Spanish maiden. There were of course Chinese scattered all over the place as us- ual, so that here within a hundred yards of one another at least nine nationalities were. represented. It would be hard to name a country which could not produce its type here. A contingent of the Baluchistan Infantry is here; we have Sikh po- licemen ; Indians of all kinds are re- presented officially in the civil and police courts: next to the "Chinks" T think the Germans predominate ; there is a large sprinkling of Ma- lays and Lascars, heaps of French- men and Swedes; Italians, Turks, Portuguese and Spaniards, all have their place in the colony; the SCOTSMAN AND IRISHMAN are here in large numbers, and then somewhere at the end of the list come a few straggling Englishmen. It is an interesting experience to go shopping in the Chinese quar- ters. The other day a friend want- ed a piece of blackwood furniture for a wedding present and we ran- sacked some of the more _ likely shops to find it, and interviewed the proprietors. They betray no eagerness to sell, but puff slowly and sourly at their tremendous pipes containing one small pinch of tobacco, or perhaps opium, and allow you to pull about the articles exposed for sale as much as you please--it saves them trouble. Some of them speak prac- tically no English, but they usually have a small son who has been edu- cated at Queen's College here, a large Anglo-Chinese boys' school, and he acts as interpreter. The more you bargain the more lethargic the shopkeeper becomes; you fee! you are boring him _ to death, and stammer apologies which he -accepts gracefully. "No, he's not got what you want.'"' 'Will he have it later on?' He can't say. Perhaps, you suggest, tentatively, he may have the article in his go- down, He doesn't think so; any- way, the godown's locked up, and it's too much trouble to bother about opening it. Then you are afraid you must go somewhere clse. He thinks it might be as well, and then he and his assistants can all go * THE NEXT SHOP you call at you find a more wide- awake man in charge, who-has marked you down as "a sure thing." and greets you with an oily smile. "Yes, plenty stuff have got. Yes, he savvys what you want."' "Wow much?' An absurdly extor- tionate amount is named; You sug- gest a third of this price, whereat he laughs pleasantly, and skilfully changes the conversation and chats of the weather, and inquires "How long you have Hongkong been." You return to the business in hand and begin to bargain. You are a great nuisance, but he will humor you. He slightly reduces the | original price. You tel! him you are not satisfied in the rich flowery language of the Orient. He be- comes pained, one might almost say shocked. Hours seemed to have passed and you suggest splitting the difference. The tears stand in his eyes, You are cruel and unreasonable. As you step outside there is a groan of anguish, You turn. "Maskee," he moans. "Oan do." He packs it up for you, fastens it, seals it, all with a chastened air, as of one who bas been robbed of his ewe lamb against his~will--and all the time he is making at least 50 per cent. over the transaction ! GOODINE USED DODD'S KIDNEY PILLS. Doctor said she would have to undergo operation, but Dodd's Kidney Pills cured her. Central Kingsclear, York Co., N. B., May 20 (Special).--"The doc- tor said I would have to undergo an operation." So said Mrs. J. V. Goodine, of this place. But she smiled as she made the remark, for all need of the dreaded operation had vanished. Mrs. Goodine used Dodd's Kidney Pills and is a well woman. Given in brief and in her own words, Mrs. Goodine's experi- ence is as follows: "T was very miserable with Kid- ney Disease and unable to do my own work. The doctor said I would have to undergo an operation. Af- ter using three boxes of Dodd's Kidney Pills I was all better and able to do my work. This state- ment is true, as you can easily prove by enquiring among my neighbors."' Dodd's Kidney Pills cure the Kid- neys; cured kidneys strain all the poisons and other causes of disease out of the blood. Thus Dodd's Kidney Pills are a natural cure for all Kidney diseases and all ills caused by diseased kidneys. C A WALKING SUIT FOR COOLER DAYS. This smart suit is made of grey cloth. A certain professor of divinity who was spending the summer in the Scottish Highlands was invited to baptize the infant son of the lo- cal minister. When the time for the ceremony arrived, the guest gave out for con- gregational singing a paraphrase much favored in such occasions. "Let us," said he, "sing from the fifth paraphrase, beginning at the second verse: 'As sparks in close succession rise.' '"' To his consternation, the congre- gation giggled audibly. Afterward, asking the clerk what he had done wrong, that functionary replied, "You must know, professor. the minister's name is Sparks, and yon- der is his tenth bairn!" Gold and Silyer Go to the Bottom With Sunken Ships. The poets need not exceed the terms of their license in order to say that the floor of the ocean is littered with gold and silver and Indeed, the state- prose, for many and many a trea- sure-ship has been lost since men first began to go down to the sea in ships. > : Only last month the steamship Oceana was sunk by a collision off Beachy Head. Ten lives were lost, and five million dollars in gold coin, advanced for the uses of the new Chinese government by European bankers, went with the wreck to the bottom of the English Channel. _ Another recent case is that of the Merida of the Ward Line, rammed by the Admiral Farragut, fifty-five miles off Cape Charles, May 12, 1911. She had on board seven hun- dred and fifty thousa d dollars in silver bars, and about thirty thou- sand dollars in coin. The ship to get away safely in the boats. Where the Merida went down the water is two hundred and ten feet deep, and until there is some im- provement in diving devices, the ship must make one of the company of irrecoverable wrecks that strew the ocean bed. Successful work has never been done in the water at a depth greater than one hundred and eighty-two feet.. At this depth a Spanish diver, Angel Erostarbe, recovered forty-five thousand dollars in silver bars from the wreck of the steamer Skyro, sunk off Cape Finisterre. Alexander Lambert, a_ British diver, saved three hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the Spanish mail-steamer Alphonse XIT., in one hundred and sixty-two feet of water, off Las Palmas, Grand Canary. Another English- man, W. Ridyard, brought up two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in silver from the Hamilton Mit- chall, sunk in one, hundred and fifty |. feet of water, off Leuconna Reef, in the China Sea. The Mediterranean sponge-fishers work at a depth of one hundred and fifty feet, and the pearl-divers of Australia go down one hundred and twenty feet, but they use no appa- ratus. In harbor and fortification work, a diver is seldom called on to go more than sixty feet under water. Attempts to improve the, diver's outfit so as to enable him to descend farther below the surface are con- stantly making. Dr. J. 8S. Haldane, working for the British Admiralty. has succeeded in getting two naval officers to a depth of two hundred and ten feet. The pressure of the water 'at that depth was a little more than ninety pounds to the square inch. It is this pressure that makes work far below the surface difficult as well as Hazardous. It increases at the rate of about four and a quarter pounds to the square inch for every additional ten feet of depth, and the difficulty of forcing air against such high pressure is very great indeed. 7s WOULD NOT BE WITHOUT BABY'S OWN TABLETS Once a mother has used Baby's Own Tablets she would not be with- out them. Life Was Extremely Simple for Laboring Class. The laborer's house was of very cheap construction; one built in 1305 for two laborers by Queens College, Oxford, England, was probably of masonry, of good lum- ber, but cost only twenty shillings. The goods and chattels of such a laborer in 1431, says a writer in the National Magazine, consisted of a dish, an adze, a brass pot, two plates, two augers, an axe, three legged stool, and a barrel. The common people slept in a huddle on the floor, with or without straw, and covered themselves, if cold, with their cloaks and outer clothes. Their food consisted chiefly of grain, the average allowance to a servant being thirty-six bushels a year. Salt herrings and a modi- cum of beer or milk, and in some localities fresh fish and small game were accessible to a favored few, but poaching was severely dealt with by most landlords. he.
