- Description
- Image of Jimmy Johnson (Sos-heo-wa) taken from a daugerreotype. Sos-heo-wa became a chief at Tonawanda. During the crisis with the Ogden Land Company after the signing of the Treaty of Buffalo Creek in 1838, Jimmy Johnson was one of the leaders who led Tonawanda in its fight against removal. He often traveled with the delegations to Albany and Washington, DC as the Tonawanda Senecas worked toward saving their lands. He served as an advisor to Ely S. Parker, his grand-nephew, who served as a spokesman for their struggle. Following Red Jacket's death in 1830, Johnson inherited the medal given to his great uncle by George Washington in 1792. That medal, which was later given to Ely Parker when he was named Donehogawa in 1851.
