Wampum Belts Associated with the War of 1812 Six Nations Legacy Consortium December 2011 Covenant Chain Belts Covenant Chain Wampum Belt given by Lt. Governor William Denny, PA, 1740s While the Silver Covenant Chain treaty with the British dates to 1667, this belt was associated with a Treaty made with Lt. Governor Thomas Denny of Pennsylvania on behalf of the Crown in 1740s. The imagery is significant as we see two figures, one the British and the other the Haudenosaunee. They hold the chain which represents clear, open and honest communication between them, as well as the path of peace that connects the two will always be open. In other similar belts the figures are dropping their weapons of war as seen below. Notice the single purple bead in the chest representing the heart (left).
