Conditions 'Deplorable' At Mohawk Institute, Jury's Report Reveals

The condition of the dormitories and bathroom and toilet facilities at the Mohawk Institute were described as "deplorable" by a grand jury which made an inspection of public buildings in Brant County on Tuesday.

The inspection was carried out in connexion with the opening of the Brant County Spring Assizes of the Supreme Court of Ontario with Chief Justice J. C. McRuer presiding.

The grand jury noted that the Mohawk Institute had not been inspected by a similar body during the past four years. "We strongly recommend that this institution be watched closely by succeeding grand juries for the next five to six years," the report read.

"There are 153 kiddies living in this building and this is taxing the accommodation to very serious extent. The conditions of toilet and bathroom facilities were found to be in a deplorable state and we would recommend that this condition be rectified with the least amount of delay.

Fire Equipment

"Condition of the building, particularly the dormitories, is in a very deplorable state. The fire hose and equipment is not of modern design and should be changed immediately as the fire hose was found to be rotten.

"It is recommended that two barns in connexion with the farm be torn down and removed and that a new cement silo be built next to the new dairy barn."

The jury praised the work of Rev. W. J. Zimmerman, superintendent, "who has been doing a very excellent job with what he has had to work with."
