- Special Meeting Called for Indian Chief's Selection
The nominations for the Six Nations Council, which were to have been held at Ohsweken next Monday, have been post-poned until after a public meeting next Friday clarifies the present council's recommendation that the chief councillor be named by a ballot of the voters on the reservation.
At the October 4 meeting of the council, it was decided to choose the chief councillor by ballot instead of among the 12 councillors who are elected every fall. This procedure is recommended in the revised Indian Act which went into effect in September but Ottawa decided that the council should have the support of the public meeting.
That meeting will be held in the Community Hall, Ohsweken, on October 19 with Lt.-Col. E. P. Randle, Indian superintendent, presiding. Various other aspects of the new Indian Act will also be discussed. The council has expressed the hope that as many eligible voters as possible will attend the meeting.
An order-in-council will be necessary to verify the decision of the public meeting and a new date set of the balloting. Normally, election day would have been on October 22.
