- Indian Students Told Great Future Ahead
Indian students were told here yesterday that great things were available to them in the Canadian way of life.
Rt. Rev. G. N. Luxton, Anglican Bishop of Huron, told pupils of the Mohawk Institute that all they had to do was to apply themselves to those goals.
Bishop Luxton was officiating, together with Citizenship Minister Ellen Fairclough, at a $250,000 addition to the institute.
Mrs. Fairclough yesterday also officiated at the opening of two other schools on the Six Nations Reserve.
Bishop Luxton, in his address, told pupils from reservations across Ontario that "there is a high place for each of you in our Canadian way of life."
"I'm looking forward to the day when Indians will be cabinet ministers and hold other top posts," he said.
Bishop Luxton praised the work and efforts of the institute's principal, Canon W. J. Zimmerman, who had worked steadily and patiently for many years. He said many of Canon Zimmerman's dreams had come true "but he has much more in mind for the good of the Indians."
Mrs. Fairclough, who also is superintendent-general for Indians affairs, said education depended on the pupils themselves and not on the schools where the teaching was done.
One of the first rules of learning, she said, was to listen and then to remember.
"You have brought much fine talent from many parts of the province," she said. "I have toured your classrooms and find excellent work, especially in art. I believe you are capable of thinking for yourselves and expressing yourselves."
She urged the students not to be satisfied with their learning once they leave school. Education never stops unless the individual wants it that way, she said.
