- Six Nations Indians To Join Pilgrimage to U.N.
OHSWEKEN - Chartered buses will convey representatives of the Six Nations Indian Reservation and the Six Nations Brass Band from this reservation capital to New York on September 25. There they wil join with other North American Indians for the pilgrimage to the United Nations Assembly.
While the Indian Defence League of America is making the arrangements, Indians of all tribes, creeds and political views will join in the pilgrimage. They wil be led by Rev. Emery J. Kocsis, South Plainfield, N.J.
On Friday, September 26, they will assemble at the United Nations where they will be given an official welcome and a hearing. They will then put on a program of Indian songs, dances and pageantry. This will be televised for broadcast throughout the continent.
PARADE ON 5TH AVENUEOn Saturday, September 27 at 11 a.m., the entire group will parade down 5th Avenue with police escort and will receive oficial welcome. At the Central Park Mall at 4 p.m. they will repeat their pageantry, songs, and Indian dances. On Sunday, September 28, they will return home.
In such gatherings may be seen a cross-section of Indian life of the whole North American continent. Narragansett Indians will sit side by side with those from Maniwaki, Que., Indian reservation. Six Nations, Munceys and Caughnawagas and others will join with brother Indians from reserves in the U.S.A. Costumes and headdresses may be varied but the Indians meet under the common bond of Indians of America, for whom there is no international border. They are free to roam from Alaska to the Everglades without let or hindrance.
They hope to make a pilgrimage to Manhattan Island, to see the land which their forebears sold for a musket and a few baubles.
