- Six Nations Band Council seeking legal action to evict CASBy Donna Duric, Writer
Six Nations Band Council is considering taking legal measures to get rid of the Children's Aid Society on the territory.
Council's Committee of the Whole discussed Monday the possibility of consulting its lawyer Ben Jetten on obtaining an injunction to evict the CAS-Native Services Branch from the territory.
"I don't want to move in this direction but it's the only thing I see as a council to make sure these people understand that when we make motions on behalf of our community, I want them to be carried out," said Councillor Roger Jonathan.
Band Council voted last September to evict the CAS-NSB off the territory by Oct. 1 and to continue to serve Six Nations children from Brantford until the community developed and implemented its own child welfare services.
The CAS-NSB did not end up leaving after a letter from the Confederacy was circulated shortly after Oct. 1 asking the new child welfare model is in place.
Six Nations moved to take over child protection services here about two years ago at the behest of clanmothers amid concerns from local parents they've been treated unfairly by the NSB.>
A new, Six Nations-controlled child protection model is in the works, with those involved in the design saying they hope to implement it this spring.
"They're not allowed the territory." said Jonathan. "They're not complying, so we can get an injunction now to remove them, from the courts? That's where I want to go."
Committee of the Whole will bring the issue to full council next week for further discussion.
