- Chief Joseph Logan Dies at Ohsweken
Joseph Logan Sr., the oldest hereditary chief of the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy both in age and years as a chief, died Monday on the reservation.
Chief Logan, who was 83, was made a chief in 1902 and was part of the official government of the reserve from then until 1924 when the RCMP ousted the chiefs from the Council House and replaced them with the present elected council system.
He died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Scott Hill, of R2 Ohsweken, where he had been staying for the past three months. He had been in failing health since the death of his wife, the former Louisa Johnson, almost a year ago.
Chief Logan was born on the reserve into the Deer clan of the Onondaga tribe. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Logan and came from a family of 12 brothers, all of whom died earlier. He was educated at reserve schools and for a large part of his life farmed on the reserve.
Following the 1924 ouster of the hereditary chiefs, Chief Logan received honor and respect as a world traveller in his fight for "the rights of my people."
He was part of a 10-member delegation of Six Nations hereditary chiefs that went to England for six months in 1929-30 for an audience with King George V to protest alleged treaty violations with Canada. He went to Geneva and the League of Nations to argue the confederacy's claim to independence.
