English Give Mohawk Bible Worth $4,000

An 1804 edition of St. John's Gospel in Mohawk, the first translation made by the British and Foreign Bible Society and said to be valued at $4,000, was presented to the Institute of Iroquoian Studies last night.

The Gospel was sent from England to the Upper Canada Bible Society whose local president, Dr. J.S. Hazen, presented it to Mrs. Cameron P. Isaac and William Smith, two of the earliest members of the Institute.

Presented at Church

The ceremony took place at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Sour Springs Road.

Rev. W.H. Moore of Toronto, regional secretary of the Upper Canada Bible Society, brought the Gospel to Brantford and handed it to Dr. Hazen.

Among other guests were representatives of the National Commission on the Indian Canadian. Mr. and Mrs. George Steele and Mrs. Franklin, all of Toronto, and Elliott Moses of the Six Nations Reservation.

Later, Arleigh M. Hill, a Seneca, curator of Indian arts and crafts at the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences, spoke on The Iroquois of New York State and Canada. He illustrated part of his talk with film slides.

Refreshments were served by the ladies of St. Paul's Church.
