Evelyn Johnson Bequest

As the result of a bequest of the late Evelyn H.C. Johnson to the Brantford General Hospital, three volumes of the works of Pauline Johnson, the Indian poetess, now find place in the ward which bears her name. They include "Flint and Feathers," "Legends of Vancouver" and "Shaganappi," which were presented on behalf of Miss Johnson by three of her executors, Miss Susan Hardie, Brantford, Mrs. Robert Styres, Ohsweken and Mr. A. Russell, Hagersville.

The volumes will remind all who read them of one who was once a familiar figure in Brantford and its environs - a talented Mohawk girl, who caught the music of the Grand River in "The Song My Paddle Sings," who mirrored the mood of a Canadian lake in "Erie Waters"; who reflected the beauties of Muskoka in "Shadow River" and other poems and who went further afield to the Canadian West, whose Indian legends inarticulate to the white man she preserved in English. She knew its waterways and trails and mountains and spent her last days beneath the giant trees of Stanley Park. Many years of her life she spent in travelling back and forth across the Dominion, reciting her own poems, which breathed Canadian spirit, as well as pride of the red race of which she was so proud.

The presentation books are inscribed "Bequest of the late Evelyn H.C. Johnson." - E.T. Raymond.
