Mohawk Institute Plans

The changes taking place at the Mohawk Institute were explained by Rev. Canon W. J. Zimmerman to 100 members of the Women's Auxiliaries of the Anglican Church attending the fall meeting of the Brant Deanery at St. John's Anglican Church parish hall.

Mr. Zimmerman, principal of the Mohawk Institute, said that formerly children came to the school from Southern and Eastern Ontario. With the increased use of welfare agencies, many of these children have been returned to their parents or placed in foster homes.

It recently became evident to the department of Indian affairs that 40 per cent of Northern Ontario Indian children would have no schooling this year because of lack of school facilities. Because of this, the speaker went on, 100 of these children were transferred to the Mohawk Institute.

These children, Mr. Zimmerman said, are being slowly oriented to our way of life and integrated into our schools.

The community of Brantford, he added, can also assist by inviting these children into their homes at Christmas and during the year. By doing so, the youngsters will be able to use the education they have acquired to broaden their knowledge of our way of life.

Rev. W. J. Hofland, assistant curate at Grace Anglican Church, spoke and showed slides of his work during the past five years in the Diocese of the Arctic, at Hay River and Fort McPherson.

Mr. Hofland paid tribute to the missionaries who first carried the Gospel to these isolated areas. He said that if every Christian put into practice. "Thy will, Not mine be done," there would not be so many problems in the world today. He noted that human problems in the North are similar to these in the South.

It was announced that $372,000 instead of $275,000 is now necessary for the addition to the Anglican Women's Training College in Toronto. $43,000 is still to be raised.

The spring deanery meeting will be in St. Jude's Anglican Church.
