OHSWEKEN - Six Nations Chief William Montour said Thursday elementary schools on the reserve likely will not be ready for students by Nov. 13.
He said Thursday a five-page Health and Welfare Canada details work that Indian Affairs still has to do before the schools are ready for occupancy.
"I know darn well they're not going to get it done," said Chief Montour.
Among other things, the Oct. 30 report recommends that all asbestos in the existing schools be resealed and that six inches of soil be removed from the site of School No.1. because pieces of asbestos still litter the ground after the October demolition of the school.
David Bennitz, a Health and Welfare Canada acting senior environmental officer, said Thursday his department has received lab results that confirm asbestos is in the old wing of J.C Hill School.
