Welcome to our: Page, One B£li_,Ap~ February the Second - CHILDREN 11 S PAGE Well, the bear got out of bed, this morning, saw his shadow and lazily crawled back under his bed-covers, ( One boy says, "That's just what my daddy did.") so did the ground-hog, mole and hedgehog, the late-sleepers! They heard the alarm-clock alright, came out, gave two big yawns ana_ went back to sleep for six winks more. Traditionally, it means that we are having six weeks more of wintry weather. Personally, I would rather have it now than in May. I don 1 t want any snow on ;'bread and cheese 11 day. Do you? Ed. C.P. Valentine Greetings to all of you - and here it is, : 1Roses are red, violets are blue, Honey is s-t,reet and so are you! 11 Ed. C.P. Valentine Story by Debbie Martin, Age 11, Grade 6, No. 5 School Do you know why we have Va,lentine I s Day? This is the story that was told to me. Many years ago a monk lived across the sea, in a monastery. His name was Valentine. He had four brother.s. who were quite talented. Their names were Vittorio, Johannes, Anselmo and Angelo. Each was gifted with a special talent, one was a painter, <;:me a doctor, one a teacher and one an illuminator. Valentine wa~ sad because he had no special talent like his brothers~ One day, he P,rayed to the Holy Spirit and asked what he could do to have a special talent. · · A ·voice seemed . to · ~swer him saying, "Just do the little things that are near you." He wanted to know what -i:;he little ~.hings were but received no answer. Valentine kept doing his d.aily work. -. In the mornings and afternoons, he would give the children flowers from his garden, for their mothers and teachers. Whenever he saw a mother carrying groceries or ding some hard work, he was there to help. The little children were always happy when they saw him coming. Ev.en the -baby would crawl to the door. He loved them all and patted their heads. Dogs and cats learn- ed to love him, too. They would brush along his legs and walk in front of him. He would never kick them out of his way. He knew the date of every child's birthday and would make each one a peach-pit basket and hang it at the door. People were sad when Valentine died. They met together and decided to give gifts to one another on his birthday, February 14th, in remembrance of his kindness. He was so kind and unlike other people, they believed him to be a saint and ever since then we have had St~ Valentine's Day. ************************* Thank you, Debbi·e, for your interesting story of Valentine. Ed. C.P. We had a request on our page for the life-history of a hedgehog. The following is an interesting account of this mammal » submitted by Jimmy Davey, Age 11, Grade 6, No. 5 school. The Hedgehog The hedgehog is a small :mammal that looks somewhat · like a porcupine. The -common one lives only i!f Europe. It is about nine inches long, has short ears and a long nose. Stiff hair which hardens into spines toward the ends, covers its back. Short .fur grows on the under part of its body. When in danger, the hedgehog pulls its head down and rolls itself into a ball of sharp brown spikes. It has its meal at night . It eats small animals, snakes, birds and birds' eggs. It can be tamed easily; some people keep it as a house-pet to get rid of insects and other pests. When cold weather comes, it crawls into a hole and sleeps all winter. **************** What an excellent story of a hedgehog, Jimmy, you really educated me. I always had the i&ea it was as big as a pig but am glad to know it is only nine inches long. Now _the problem is 7 - What is the difference between a mammal and an animal? I always thought my cat was an animal but I'm told it's a mammalo Is that right? Looks as if you'll have to write again. Edo CoP. ~quest The bat is neither a .beast nor a bird, it's half and half. 'l'his odd "beast-bird" , \ would make an interesting story. I know how it sleeps but I'm not telling. Come on with youx story 7 pleaseo Ed. C.Po
