OHSWEKEN - The Six Nations community dining hall has been transformed into an assembly line as dozens of volunteers pack, label and seal boxes of food and medical supplies for the Mohawks at Oka, Que.
Tables are jammed into the room, loaded with a combination of food and goods ranging from cornflakes to crackers, from potatoes to peanut butter and from Band-Aids to baby food.
"We just couldn't keep up with the things coming in today," said Claudette General, surveying the stacks of items surrounding her.
The Kanesatake Mohawks are entering the ninth day of their standoff with the Quebec provincial police. They are protesting the expansion of a golf course on land which they claim.
Karen Martin was one of the volunteers packing the boxes and carefully listing the contents on the outside of each box. She is a nurse and has four children, but felt it was important to help so left work early to lend a hand.
"I wouldn't want to be in that position. I'd like to think that someone would help us in the same situation."
She's worried about people behind the barricades, who are having difficulties getting necessary supplies past the police.
