Rested at Styres Funeral Home until Tuesday 1:30 p.m. then .to Christ Church for funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment in adjoining cemetery. Rev. Karl Hansen officiated. SMITH - In the West Haldimand Hospital, on Tuesday, January 7, 1969, Peter Helmuth Smith, R 6 Hagersville, in his 94th year ; beloved husband of Mayme McCurdy; dear father of David Bud of Flint, Mich, brother of Nelles, California,and Mrs. Robert (Fannie) Hill, Hamil tr.:,: also 1 grandson and 1 greatgrandson survive. Rested at the Styres' Funeral Home, Ohswekcn until Thursday for funeral ser vice at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel. Interment in St. Peter's Cemetery, Ohsweken. Rev. R. Odendahl officiated. Descendant of Capt. Joseph ~rant dies - Peter Helmuth Smith, 94, formerly the oldest living relative of Capt. Joseph Brant, :passed away in the Hagersville West Haldimand Hospital on Jan. 7, 1969. Mr. Smith was born in 1874 at Middleport, Ont. As a young man he went to Detroit for employment and worked for the city. He was the youngest chief electrical engineer ~n the city of Detroit. '.-lhile i n Detroit, he met and married Mayme McCurdy in · 1904. They · · lived a happily married life for 65 years. In 1928 they decided they had enough of city life and removed to Canada to the home Six Nations Reserve, and settled on the S. Hardi P farm near no. 4 schoole Hr s . Smith became very active in institute work and in church · · activities. They retired from active farm work in 1957 and moved to the Sour Springs location. Their one son David (Bud) married Irvine Martin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Herb martin, Sour Springs. They had two children, David and Marilyn. The tragic death of Marilyn, 8 years old, was a sad blow to the entire family. There is now one great granq- child, ,··a fourth generation David. \,Jhile in the U.S. I1r. 8mi th became a member of the Masons Roosevelt Lodge in Detroit and later transferred to the Brantford Doric Lodge . In his later years r1r. 3mi th' s heal th failed considerably. He spent his 90+h birthday in the Hagersville 1 fest Haldima..YJ.d Hospital and for this quiet gentleman the entire staff gave a birthday party complete with a huge birthday cake. He was deluged with gifts and happily serenaded with "Happy Birthday." ·· on the last visit of his family to the hospital during his final illness, he did not recognize them and passed away two days later on Jan. 7, 1969. .. ·: The many beautiful Smith "was held, among them Brant Women's Institutes. Robert · Among the Brant heirlooms possessed by Mr. Smith, were Brant's bow and arrow, 2 china pieces and a Molly Brant pin. These were donated to the Brantford Museum. Still in family possession are 2 silver engraved tablespoons, said to have been given to Brant in Eng]and by King George 111.
