- Six Nations land deal delayed after Confederacy chiefs object
OHSWEKEN - A deal between the province and Six Nations council on the use of land claimed by the band along a provincial highway was delayed Wednesday when traditional chiefs demanded a say in the agreement.
Ontario Transportation Minister Ed Philip was prepared to sign a deal giving the council $445,000 in return for the use of about six hectares of land along Highway 54, which the band claims.
The ministry wants to make improvements to the road.
Traditional Confederacy chiefs say they signed the land agreements with the European settlers, and they remain the only ones who can negotiate land deals.
After last minute meetings with the Confederacy, Chief Coun. William Montour said he would not sign anything with the province until it has been discussed with the traditional chiefs.
