Six Nations seek deal with China

OHSWEKEN - Six Nations band council hopes to make a deal with China to build an assembly plant on Six Nations land.

Chief Coun. Steve Williams and band councillor Roger Jonathan will leave for China next week to meet with officials of the state-owned Dong Fong Electric Corporation that makes large hydroelectric equipment such as generators and motors.

Council approved the trip Tuesday.

The company would like to get into the North American market and wants a plant to assemble motors from parts made in China.

The plant would be built in Six Nations' proposed industrial park north of Ohsweken.

Six Nations would focus on marketing the product and provide the repairs and troubleshooting service, suggested Jack Chrisjohn, Six Nations Economic Development Officer, in a memo on the proposal.
