"A Mohawk Chapel Stamp"

Two centuries ago, in 1785, Capt. Joseph Brant ordered that St. Paul's, the Chapel of the Mohawks, be built. Last year, the aging structure, built largely of wood, was magnificently restored with the help of a nation-wide fund campaign.

Canada Post has been asked to issue a postage stamp to mark this bicentennial. So far the post office people have not replied to the Mohawk Chapel Restoration Committee request but surely they will not overlook this important period in Canada's history.

It can be a beautiful stamp depicting a simple but beautiful building.

The federal and provincial governments and hundreds of private donors and foundations saw the worth of preserving what has been a national historic site for decades and in 1904 was named as the only royal chapel outside of Britain.

In 1961, the Post Office issued a stamp to mark the centennial of the birth of the Six Nations poet Pauline Johnson. A Mohawk Chapel stamp would continue the Canadian postal tradition of marking contributions this part of Canada has made to the national heritage.
