- Natives' land claim may block developmentBy David Young, Expositor Staff
The city's attempts to put a trunk sewer line across the Grand River to its northwest industrial area may have hit a snag on the bottom of the Grand.
The city has all the approvals it needs to do the river portion of the trunk line from just west of the Brant Conservation area across the river to the northwest. The sewer line will cross an island in the middle of the river.
But Six Nations claims the bed of the Grand River and the islands in the river.
Six Nations is concerned it has not been consulted, said Phil Monture, director of the Six Nations Land Research Department.
Mr. Monture has sent the city and the province a letter expressing opposition to the work because of land claims filed in July 1992.
"The province shouldn't be issuing permits," Mr. Monture said Wednesday. "They have no right to issue permits on land under claim by us."
Mr. Monture said he could not say what Six Nations may decide to do. "We have plenty of things up our sleeves and we have long sleeves."
