SN Council asks for audit into GRM finances by Mark McEachern SIX NATIONS - Six Nations Council have asked for an audit into the finances surrounding the proposed Grand River Mills (GRM) yarn factory, a company that they are a 60% share-holder of through the Six Nations Equity Fund Corporation (SNEC). The confirmation by council to proceed with the audit was issued on Saturday as a result of the on going controversies surrounding the project, one that has the community asking questions as to who the other business partners are in the project and what contributions, if any, have been contributed on their behalf. "We are going to put everything on hold right now and wait for the audit," said Chief Wellington Staats on Tuesday. "It would be in the best interest of everybody if we stopped right now until everything is cleaned up and we look at all partners involved within this company." Tom Darnay, the Six Nations director of finance, told the Teka on Monday night that the audit will be conducted by the accounting firm KPMG, which conducts the band's regular audits. "We met with KPMG today and they have started the auditing process," said Darnay. "We don't know when it will be completed but they are aware that we would like the information back as soon as possible." Cynthia Jamieson, Six Nations Council's director of operations, told reporters that the audit into the finances surrounding GRM will likely be restricted to status members in the community. "No decision has been made, but if we are consistent, only community members will be allowed to view it," she said.
