To walk through the negro section of a northern American city is to see where the Motown Sound comes from. On a street corner, one might see a lone boy playing his harmonica, with dreams of someday being the next Stevie Wonder. Nearby a small transistor radio blares out pure soul music from the local radio station. Radio station WUFO in Buffalo is just such a radio station. Once this was the only setting for Motown - only a few singers and groups were popular outside the slums. Gradually, though, Motown started becoming popular, with singers like Stevie Wonder and Chubby Checkers making smash hits Motown groups like the Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Temptations and the Four Tops had one hit after another. Today, the Motown Sound has come into its own, not only popular in the cities of the north, but also in the farmlands of midwest. Motown is even becoming popular in Britain and Europe which is quite an accomplishment for music that once was sung by slaves. Sunday School Leads Congregation in Morning Worship at Grand River At the regular Sunday worship service at Grand River on May 19th, the Sunday School led the congregation in worship. Dean Thomas gave the call to worship. Brian Martin led in the responsive reading. The scripture lesson was read alternatively by Blosom Hill, Michele Davis, Richard Lickers and Debbie Lickers. The pastoral prayer was offered by Judy Davis. The announcements were made by Charlene Davis, and Dean Thomas pronounced the benediction. Throughout the service the entire Sunday school sat at the front of the church. A special hymn was sung by the Sunday school entitled, "We Are Little Children." Everyone in the congregation can be proud of the fine job done by the up and coming younger generation. Who, if they get much better, will put the minister out of work. Poem - "Holes" (by P.A.S.) Have you ever thought How important holes are? If they weren't in our heads We couldn't see far. If they weren't in our clothes We couldn't have buttons. If they weren't in sheep's heads We couldn't have mutton!?! If they weren't in the ground We couldn't have trees. If they weren't in our noses We couldn't sneeze. Holes can be good. But holes can be bad; If they're in our socks Mom will be mad!
