- Santa Parade winds through Ohsweken, Christmas a month awayBy Chase Jarrett, Writer
Crowds lined Ohsweken roads Saturday morning awaiting the onset of the 21st annual Santa Claus Parade and the much anticipated Christmas floats.
Co-organizer Angela Powless said putting on the parade is always worth it when she sees the look on the kids faces. "Their eyes are all lit up, they're waving at everyone. They're happy to see Santa."
"At that time people from all factions and beliefs are there for the kids," she said adding that the parade brings a sense of community. "Sometimes we're so divided by different things."
Powless has been organizing the parade for 21 years.
But there was a single parade stalling hiccup when a Six Nations man fell from one of the Eagle's Nest Six Nations float and broke his leg. Paul Powless, 44, was attended by paramedics and fire fighters on scene and transported to Hagersville General Hospital.
At the end, Six Nations Red Hats stole the show and were the people's favorite in the 45 minute processions. The Red Hat float won the People's Choice Award and the first place for overall best float. In second place was Six Nations Health Services, followed by Six Nations Plow Man Association with former Miss Six Nations Lorelei lssacs in third. The winning float in the school category was Ohsweken Daycare.
In the kids category: first place was the Youth Lodge, second place was Lalista Hill-Miller, and third place was Little Drummer Boy.
