_. Preface “pHE RECORD-NEWS presents to the citizens of Smiths Falls and vicinity, with a certain degree of pardonable pride, “Who's Who” in Smiths Falls: The title of this volume clearly indicates its character. Enclosed with- in its covers will be found compelling and illuminating pen-and-ink sketches of local celebrities, past and present, and interesting: and instructive descriptive narratives of successful and progressive places of business, bustling manufacturing plants, and great transportation systems, together with hundreds of life-like photogravures of the official heads of these concerns and vivid exterior and interior views of their buildings, which help to make “Who's Who” one of the largest and most preten- tious publications of its kind ever issued by any newspaper in the Ottawa Valley. This splendid work of nearly 100 pages, printed on the. finest coated paper, embellished with the best work that the printer's and engraver's art. can command, and containing graphic and entertaining reading material of a permanent value, will be found both enlightening and instructive to former and present residents of Smiths Falls. Particularly will it make a strong appeal to former residents living distant from the old town and who are naturally interested in its steady growth, real progress and genuine prosperity. Only through the whole-hearted and spontaneous co-operation of the commercial, industrial and financial local interests has the success of this number been rendered possible and to them we extend our grateful appreciation and heartfelt thanks. The cordial official endorsement of the Town Council, the Board of Trade, the Board of Education, the Hydro-Electric Commission, the Waterworks Commission, and, in fact, all civic bodies, has added materially to the splendid results achieved in assisting this newspaper to publish a really notable volume. “Who's Who” was conceived primarily and essentially to “boost ” not only Smiths Falls business interests but the Town of Smiths Falls and that the appeal of the Record-News has been so generously and generally seconded makes this result possible. As an instance of this and to make practical results certain, the Smiths Falls Board of Trade in keeping with its traditional policy of progress has decided to give this volume a virtually world-wide circulation by placing it in the hands of all Canadian Trade Commissioners in all foreign countries. To place Smiths Falls definitely and indelibly on the World map in black and white is the prime objective of the Record-News. If through the medium of this publication, manufacturing plants seeking a desirable location in which to establish factories, or prospective home-seekers can be brought here to live, a vital need will have been accomplished and the purpose of this volume will not have been in vain.
