History of Dutch Settlers

The following is a collection of data concerning the immigration of Dutch Catholic settlers in the township of Flos.

Frank Baks

- Mr. Baks came from Lichtenvoorde, Gelderland, to Canada in the year 1948.

- Mrs. Baks came from Groenlo, Gelderland, to Canada in the year 1950.

Marten Bax

-Mr and Mrs. Bax came to Canada on March 18, 1953, from Zieuwent, Gelderland.

-were sponsored by someone in Woodbridge, then moved to Clarmont, then to Newmarket, then to Gormerly, and then to Flos in 1959.

John Colyn

-Mr. and Mrs. Colyn came to Canada in 1949 from North Brabant, Gerderen.

-sponsored by Earl Trace in Elmvale, moved 3 years later to Alliston and then to Cookstown.

Tom Colyn

-Mr. and Mrs. Colyn came to Canada in 1951, on the boat the Voldendam, from Lieden, South Holland.

-moved to this area because his brother lived here, worked for Sam Langman.

-moved to Stroud in 1953, moved to Cookstown in 1954, moved back to Stroud in 1955, moved to Holland in 1963, moved to Stroud in 1964 and moved back to Elmvale in 1970.

J. Debaker

-came to Canada on the SS Noort Dam in 1949

-worked 2 years fo Charlie O’Larry in [blank] worked the next 3 years on Camp Borden Construction, then moved to Flos and bought farm from Freddy Knight in 1957.

-sold farm to an Italian in 1970, moved to Alliston

Marten DeGroot

-came to Canada in 1951 on the Volendam

-Mrs. DeGroot came from St. Anthonis, Oploo, North Brabant.

-Mr. DeGroot came from Oploo, C.A.

-Lived at Stroud for 5 years then moved to this area

Cornelius Dekkers

-came to Canada in 1951 ?, from North Brabant

-moved to Flos with son in 1973

Herman DeKleyne

-came to Canada in 1954 on the Ryndam

-Mr. DeKleyne came from Oploo, North Brabant

-Mrs. DeKleyne came from Mill, North Brabant

-Moved from Barrie to Painswick and then to Flos

Gerrard Franseen

-came to Canada in May, 1953.

-Mr. Franseen came from Westerbeek, North Brabant

-Mrs. Franseen came from Haarlen, North Holland

-lived in Stayner for 9 years, relatives named Vandervalk lived there

-moved to Phelpston where they rented a place for 1 year then bought a farm in 1964

Martin Franseen

-came to Canada in 1951 on the Georgie an English boat

-Mrs. Franseen came from Someron, North Brabant

-Mr. Franseen came from Westerbeek, North Brabant

-sent to Tottenham by the Immigration Board and were sponsored by a farmer

-moved to Stayner and then to Flos in 1962

Herman Hummelink

-Mr. Hummelink came to Canada in 1953 from Ziauwent, Gelderland

-Mrs. Hummelink came to Canada in 1954 from Lichtenvoorda, Gelderland

-Mr. Hummelink moved to Stouffville and became a farmer

-Mrs. Hummelink went to Sarnia where she met Mr. Hummelink

-Moved to Flos after being married in 1957 and lived with Temolders.

-bought own farm in 1960

Frank Kleingebbick

-Mr. Kleingebbick came to Canada in 1954 from Lievelde

-Mrs. Kleingebbick came to Canada in 1958 from Meddow, Gelderland

-in 1957 he went back to Holland in 1958 got married and returned to Canada

-went to Stouffville then moved to Flos in May 1959

Joe Kleingebbick

-came to Canada in 1952 on the Reindam from Lichtenvoorde, Gelderland

-went to Stouffville and was sponsored by John Hullshof

-moved to Flos in 1959

Martin Kuypers

-came to Canada in 1951 on the Rymdam

-Mr. Kuypers came from Mill, North Brabant

-Mrs. Kuypers came from St. Antonius, Oploo, North Brabant

-Moved to Flos in 1964

Tony Nahius

-came to Canada in May 4, 1955 on the Waterman which took 9 days to get to Canada

-came from Beltrum Gelderland

-went to Halifac, then to Whitby, then to Aurora, then to Flos in April 1959 and became factory worker and farmer

-from dairy farms in Holland

Gerald Oetalaar

-came to Canada in 1952 on the Johann Ven Oldenbarrnefeld from Schyndel, North Brabant

-sponsored by a relative, went to Bradford then moved to Flos in 1968

Bill Schepers

-came to Canada in 1953 on the Waterman from Beers, North Brabant

-lived in Cookstown, then moved to Barrie, then to Phelpston in 1955-56

-no sponsoring -no relatives

Tony Temolder

-came to Canada in June 1954 on a KLM plane, from Ziauwent, Gelderland

-lived in Stouffville, then moved to Markham, then to Flos on June 15, 1957

Albert VanCastern

-came to Canada in 1954 on the boat the Marsedam from Reek, North Brabant

-lived in Stroud, moved to Vespra, worked for Don Cameron, then moved to Flos in 1954

Case Vanderpoel

-Mr. Vanderpoel came to Canada in 1952, on the boat the Maasdam, from Oud-Ade

-Mr. Vanderpoel travelled to Quebec, to Vancouver, B.C., to Alberta and then went back to Holland to get married

-came back with Mrs. Vandepoel in 1952 who came from Leiderdorp, North Holland

-went to Alliston, then moved to Schomberg, then moved to Flos in the early 1960's

Frank Vanlarhoven

-came to Canada on March 30, 1951 on the boat the Volendam SS. from Vugt, North Brabant

-lived in Lefroy for 1 year, sponsored by Charlie Locus, moved to Innisfil, then moved to Flos in 1958, bought farm in 1974.

John VanVugt

-came to Canada in 1954 from Deisan, North Brabant

-lived in Cornwall for 9 months, was sponsored by uncle

-moved to Phelpston in 1955
