Compare these two sections of Goad's Insurance maps for 1896 (top) and 1911 (bottom) showing Mill Street. In the top map starting at the top right we see the scales used to weigh livestock before being herded to the station for transport to markets. Next to the scales is a wagon shop (present location of Cameo Flowers). Hay was stored in a building on the op posite corner; this would in turn become the site of a blacksmith shop (Burkitt's), a garage (also Burkitts); this is now the site of a beauty salon. On the northwest corner we have Stirling's second town hall (Heagle's); it is today the site of Stirling Feed and Seed. Other businesses along Mill Street s north side include the Stirling House Hotel, McGee and Lagrow s Hardware and tin shop, a bakeiy, a photo studio, a gro cery store, furniture shop, and a shop selling boots and shoes. The south side of Mill Street boasts the foundry of W. J. Graham, a moulding shop and a machine shop. Other unspecified businesses would have filled in the block be tween the machine shop and "the Point" which later housed McK ee s Harness Shop. Note also that the darn which supplied power to the mills is situated somewhat west of the bridge on James Street. Today the darn is virtually under neath the bridge. In 1908 a disas trous fire wiped out most of the buildings on the north side of Mill _Street from the "bank corner" to Mill Street 1896 r J McGee and Lagrow Hardware. 2k 11
