In 1978 Bruce and Gail bought his brother Ron's business, and Bruce proceeded on his adventure while Gail continued to work both at Belleville Gen­ eral and Campbellford Memorial hospitals. In 1979 Bruce became Fire Chief of Stirling, until Stirling amalgamated with Rawdon Township and then became Chief of the Stirling Rawdon-Fire De­ partment. He retired from that position in January of 2007. Woodbeck Auto Parts continued to thrive and grow and Gail joined her husband there in 1985. Bruce became involved in Auto Recycling organizations. Since that time he has sat on many advisory boards both at the Provincial and Federal levels and does so to this date. Children: In 1976 a son, Greg, was bom and in 1979 a daugh­ ter Audra. Greg, an avid sports person throughout his youth, attended Acadia University playing varsity football and intramural hockey in season. After university he came back to Stirling and joined the family business. In 2004 Greg married Angela Lilly, daughter of Ray and Diane, of Trenton. Angela teaches high school and is a keen competitor in Ironman Sports. Twice she has competed in the world Ironman in Hawaii and in 2007 she placed seventh in her age division. Audra, a swimmer and a scuba enthusiast attended University of Toronto majoring in Biology and Chemistry. After graduation she worked for the Rog­ ers Corporation in retail as the youngest manager in Canada. Three years later she decided to go back to her edu­ cational roots and became a regulatory affairs gradu­ ate at Humber College. Today she works for Can Reg Inc. and is currently on contract to Proctor and Gamble in their pharmaceutical division and resides in Mississauga. THE ZANDBERGEN FAMILY by Lewis Zandbergen, Betty Couch, John Zandbergen and Paul Zandbergen Descendants of Peter and Margaret (nee Elmers) Zandbergen can trace their ancestry to Sytze Hendriks Zandbergen (1797-1847), a labourer, and Trijntje Si- jbrens Hoekstra (1789-1870) on the paternal side and Johannes Jacobus Elmers (1812-1855) tailor, brick­ layer and colonist, and Johanna Hendrica Zeedelaar (1816-1844) on the maternal side. Johannes Jacobus Elmers and Johanna Hendrica were colonists in the Fredricksoord settlement near Descendants still live in the area around Appelscha and in the town itself. Our paternal grand- A father, Luitzen Zand- I bergen (1896-1976), became a baker in ried Engbertje Bos (1892- 1984) on May 10, 1918. They had a family of six: Grietje (1919-1979), Gerre- dina (1920-1994), Geesje (1923-1974), Bart (b 1925), Andries (1930-1990), and Piet (b 1938). In 1958 while on a visit to his children in Canada, Jan Wilhelm Elm­ ers died in Brockville; he is interred in the Brockville Cemetery on Highway #2, west of Brockville. -y. Appelscha. Jan Wilhelm and Engbertje (Bos) Elmers The Zandbergen fam­ ily came to Canada in 1952 and given names were Anglicized. Pe­ trus (Peter), his wife, Grietje and their three chil­ dren, Luitzen (Lewis) 18, 1949, Engbertha (Betty) b. January 4, 1951, and Jan Wilhelm (John) b. April 18, 1952, arrived in Halifax harbour in October. The ship Groote Beer brought them from Appelscha, Friesland, The Netherlands, to a new world and a new life. Our Uncle Andrew, Dad's brother, picked us up Appelscha. Luitzen married 1. Lieuwkje van der Veer (1895- 1946) May 11, 1918. They had a family of y six: Antje (b 1919), Pe­ trus (1920-1994), Lammert (1923-2006), Anne (1924- mir (Margaret) b. June Luitzen and Lieuwkje (van der Veer) Zandbergen 1 993), Andries (1926-2005), and Fokke (1928-2002). Luitzen married 2. Ybeltje van der Veer (Lieuwkje's sister) Previously the family had lived in Rottevalle and Oostermeer, Friesland. Our maternal grandfather, Jan Wilhelm Elmers (1887-1958), was a farmer and also ran a bicycle repair shop in Appelscha.
