- ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY
An academic department responsible for teaching courses in philosophy, the Philosophy Department at St. Jerome's University predates the university's federation with the University of Waterloo. When St. Jerome's was affiliated with the University of Ottawa (1947 - 1960), the primary focus of the department was to provide seminarians with a solid grounding in philosophy before going on to study theology. After federation this was no longer the department's primary focus, although the pre-theology preparation of seminarians did continue until 1991.
St. Jerome's has academic responsibility for all philosophy students enrolled through St. Jerome's, the department receives its budget from St. Jerome's, and hires its faculty independently of the University of Waterloo. The philosophy faculty at St. Jerome's are also members of the philosophy department at the University of Waterloo.
