Sociology has been taught at St. Jerome's since 1961. In 1971 Anthropology became an adjunct to Sociology and courses were taught in both disciplines by two faculty members. In 1982 Anthropology ceased to be offered through St. Jerome's and Sociology thus became an independent department. The faculty at St. Jerome's co-operates and co-ordinates the Sociology program with the Sociology faculty at the University of Waterloo..
St. Jerome'has academic responsibility for all Sociology students registered through St. Jerome's, the department receives its budget from St. Jerome's, and hires its own faculty. The chairperson of the department is chosen by the sociology faculty at St. Jerome's University.
