ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY:

Kenneth McLaughlin was appointed Academic Dean and Vice-President of the University of St. Jerome's College from 1989 to 1995. At that time the Academic Dean was appointed to a four-year term with the possibility of reappointment for a further two-year term. During Prof. McLaughlin's term of office St. Jerome's celebrated its 125th Anniversary and the St. Jerome's Centre for Catholic Experience celebrated its 10th anniversary of operation. This was a period of financial uncertainty for the College due to new Ontario government legislation under the Social Contract which affected funding levels and an overall significant drop in university applications. There were physical and administrative changes at the College including ongoing computerization; library re-structuring; and especially a re-structuring of Student Services, Academic Services, and Administrative Services which led to the creation and hiring of a Director of Student Services and an assistant to the Registrar. A five-year long- range planning program was initiated at St. Jerome's and the Dean was appointed to the University of Waterloo's Liaison and Planning Committee as the representative for St. Jerome's. There was an increase in established scholarships and bursaries as well as the establishment in 1994 of the John J. Wintermeyer Chair which allowed a prominent scholar to explore topics of importance to the Church in the contemporary world.

Other issues that arose and were addressed during this period were how to deal with students with AIDS or HIV, promotion of gender awareness, student emergency funding, the review and revision of St. Jerome's Mission Statement, and extensive revisions to the College Handbook.
