1984 Alumni Executive Elections PRESIDENT Peter Visser (BA '71)' Peter entered Hamilton Teacher's College after receiving his BA in English in 1971. He has taught elementary and high school in Burlington and today serves as Vice Principal of St. Ignatius of Loyola High School in Oakville. As a student Peter was Treasurer of the Student Union and was a prefect in the Men's Residence for one year. He was also Assistant Director of Residence under Ellis Brown. Married with two children, ages 3 and 6, Peter and his wife Irene live in Burlington. In his spare time Peter plays hockey in an old-timer's league and he enjoys coaching and refereeing. "I want to help establish the groundwork for a successful alumni association," says Peter. "We need to work closely with the College to provide solid financial support and to help keep grads in touch with each other. For myself, I feel I have an ability to relate to people well and I know many alumni across the province. I think this can be beneficial." Mike Schnarr (BA '76) Mike served as Director of the men's residence from 1977 to 1979 and works as a professional painter and decorator today. As a student of Resurrection College, he was instrumental in establishing several volunteer programs at the K-W Detoxification Centre, St. Agatha Children's Village and the Scott Pavillion. Mike was and still is an avid sports and outdoors enthusiast and recently he has also taken up piano lessons. Mike and his wife Sue have one adopted son and are expecting their second child in April. "If there was ever a time to be nominated, the beginning is the most challenging," says Mike of the alumni executive. "I'm willing to work to choose the directions we can take." Elections close May 25, 1984, 3:00 p.m. VICE-PRESIDENT (Kitchener-Waterloo Region) Rick Booth (BA '73) V Rick graduated from St. Jerome's as a mature student and now teaches at Laurel Vocational School in Waterloo. Prior to this he worked as an administrative assistant to the Plant Manager at Superior Continental of Edmonton. He is president of Asahi Judo Club in Kitchener and is an instructor as well. Rick and his wife Lois have three children, aged 16, 14, and 11. For the past five years Rick has been a negotiator for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation. As a student, he spent two years on the College's student union. "I'm a people-oriented person", says Rick, "and I believe in retaining the values and friendships forged during my years at St. Jerome's. It's important to put back into the system what you take out, and I would like to contribute to an alumni association and help the College retain contact with its graduates." Virginia Freeman (BA '81) Virginia started working at the University of Waterloo as a contractual computer consultant after completing her MA in English in 1983. (Her BA was in English and Mathematics). She remains active in the University Catholic Community and in adult literacy training. "SJC always was,and still is, for me, a place in which good friends could be found sharing an enthusiasm for learning and for living. At both the Alumni Picnic last summer and at the recent Chapter Dinner, that enthusiasm still lived on. On an alumni executive committee, I would work to promote this spirit." We need your feedback What goals do you think an alumni association should pursue? What priorities should it set? How can it best serve the College and its graduates? We need your views and encourage you to express them on the ballot enclosed with this issue. Your ideas will be carefully considered by the new executive committee. VICE-PRESIDENT (Hamilton Region) Dave Botts (BA '77) Dave worked as a teaching assistant in outdoor education with the Waterloo County Separate School Board from 1980 to 1982. He received a BEd from Queen's in 1983 and is working in the acid regeneration department of Dofasco in Hamilton. He remains interested in rock-climbing and back-packing. "I'd like to give back something the school gave me because I'm appreciative of the broader approach to education I received at St. Jerome's," says Dave. Peter Curtis (BA '78) Peter is presently the Director of Community Services for the Township of Flamborough. In this capacity he administers the parks and recreation and fire departments as well as other municipal services. Peter also sits on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Municipal Management Development Board. He and his wife Bernadette live in Dundas and are expecting their first child. As a student Peter lived in the men's residence and was active in intramural sports. "A strong alumni association can help the College grow in prominence and ensure a strong financial base in the long term," says Peter. "I have received many benefits from my years at St. Jerome's and would like to contribute my time and energy on its behalf." Paul Ecker (BA '81) Paul works as a sales clerk with a Brantford painting firm and has also been a self-employed decorator. He is presently taking courses at Humber College toward an architectural technician's certificate. He is vice-chairman of the St. Mary's Parish Liturgical Committee and this involvement dovetails nicely with Paul's experience with music and liturgy as a student. He is also a member of the Cathedral Choir in Hamilton. "I appreciate the contact with graduates of St. Jerome's College," says Paul, and I think an alumni association can serve as a catalyst for drawing together the extended College community in many walks of life throughout Canada." 4/Update!
