College News Lisa leads Athenas to best season yet She is the all-time leading scorer in University of Waterloo women's field hockey history and the first field hockey player at UW to achieve all-Canadian status. She captained her team for three years and was chosen as the University's Athlete of the Week on five separate occasions. She is the number one backup player for the Canadian National Women's field hockey team heading to the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Such an array of accomplishments could be enough to go to a person's head; but not so for St. Jerome's history major Lisa Bauer, who recently completed her fifth season as a centre forward with the UW Athenas women's field hockey team. Lisa's pleasant and unassuming manner belies the inner strength and competitiveness which has brought her such achievement in this demanding sport. The breadth of her experience, though, has not been limited to inter-collegiate play. She started as a member of Kitchener's St. Mary's High School team and has represented Ontario at a number of A light moment shared by the St. Mary's High School junior debating team of Kitchener during the Central Western Ontario Regional Debating Finals hosted by the College on February 21. 6/Update! national and international competitions. Judy McCrae, Coach of the Athenas for the past twelve years, says that Lisa is one of the finest all-round players she has known and will be hard to replace next season. "She is a strong individual who understands what it takes to be a team player and to be a winner," explains McCrae emphatically. "Lisa is well-directed and has great leadership qualities. As Captain for three years, she was well-liked by her teammates and I know that players respected her and looked up to her." On the field Lisa is a particularly strong runner and her speed has contributed to her scoring prowess. She led the Athenas to their most successful season in the Fall of '83 with 29 of their 67 goals. They landed a berth in the National Finals held at the University of New Brunswick -- a first in UW women's field hockey. "Canada's national coach has chosen Lisa as the number one backup player for the Canadian Olympic squad," says McCrae. Lisa completed her BA at Christmas and has been in Saskatchewan over the winter months pursuing independent studies and training on her own. Looking back on her last year with the Athenas, she says, "I know I wouldn't have had such a strong season if my teammates hadn't worked as hard as they did -- it was a real team effort." When Lisa graduates this spring from St. Jerome's, Coach McCrae believes the accolades won't end with her departure. "She is a prime candidate for UW's female athlete of the year honours." As for next fall it's either graduate school for a Masters in history or possibly teacher's college. No doubt, field hockey will remain a strong part of Lisa's life. Over 80 students from nine area high schools debated whether or not "civil disobedience is a justifiable form of protest in a democratic society." Over 50 judges, including College faculty members, also took part in the day. For the first time, the top senior team at the close of the tournament won the University of St. Jerome's College Challenge Trophy. The day's winners included Kitchener's Eastwood Collegiate taking top senior honours while top junior honours went to the rival team from St. Jerome's High School coached by College alumnus Ed Tell. Second place junior and senior honours were won by Waterloo-Oxford High School. (Photo courtesy of Jay Banks, Eastwood Collegiate.) College's future focus of committee "New directions in the Roman Catholic Church initiated by Vatican II, the changing character of religious orders such as the Congregation of the Resurrection and developing patterns in post-secondary education in Canada and Ontario all suggest the need for St. Jerome's College to adapt to these changing circumstances and times." So says College President Father Norm Choate in a letter to all constituents of the College. A Committee on the Structures and Functions of the College's Board of Governors has been established to seek suggestions and advice on ways in which.the governance of the College can be updated. Areas such as the appointment of a president, the composition of the Board of Governors and modernizing the College's Act of Incorporation are among the many topics being considered by all associated with St. Jerome's College -- faculty, staff, students, the Board of Governors, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Congregation of the Resurrection and alumni. When an alumni executive is formed, the College will seek its views on these important considerations. More details to follow in future issues of Update! Czech dissident novelist Josef Skvorecky spoke to a capacity crowd at the St. Jerome's Centre on February 8. He offered personal reflections on the communist suppression of the Catholic Church in his homeland. Skvorecky argued that the Canadian Church focuses too much on the peace movement, economic statements and Latin America, while ignoring the "virtual holocaust in the East".
