Three Presidents Helping Fr. Louis cut the anniversary cake are current President Dr. Doug Letson, left, and former President Fr. Norm Choate, C.R. The cake itself became history in a matter of minutes. Feeling like a young man again Fr. Louis is greeted by admirers Rebecca Theis, left, daughter of Prof. John Theis, and Mary-Jac Tell of the Library Staff. MC Brian Eby prepared to work with, and for, others -- for the little people seeking to eke out a living while the lords talk of politics. To shrug your shoulders and smile will mend nothing, not even a rent in one's trousers." In listening to Fr. Louis reflect, one sensed that, despite the obvious changes in the College's 125 year history, he was proud to see his vision of higher education brought to such fruition. His words of wisdom were not lost on the assembled as the evening was both entertaining and instructive. All came away with a better sense of the College's history and a greater appreciation for their collective role in maintaining the traditions Fr. Louis courageously began in his humble log cabin. Toasting the 125th anniversary are students Rosemarie Burton and Mike Spohn. UW Alumni Directory Second Edition Over 3,000 Copies Sold! In the days leading up to the students' funerals, a single candle burned in vigil in Notre Dame Chapel accompanied by a book of remembrance which students could sign. The peaceful solitude of the Chapel provided all with an opportunity for silent reflection on the tragedy. College Chaplain Melody McLoughlin Marratto addressed a campus-wide vigil at Federation Hall. She told over 800 students who gathered during the exam period, that "men and women must learn that they carry the vision of the future ... . We weep and we will not forget them as we work to make a new world where we can be free." New Chaplain Fr. Frank Manno, C.R., was recently appointed Chaplain of the College, succeeding Fr. Charlie Westfall, C.R. who resigned for health reasons after serving as Chaplain for three years. Fr. Frank was ordained to the priesthood in 1974, and has worked in chaplaincy for six years at St. Jerome's High School, and an additional six years at St. Joseph's-Scollard Hall in North Bay. Presently he is vocation animator for the Congregation of the Resurrection in Ontario. He will be working with Melody McLoughlin Marratto who became Chaplain in July 1989. The youngest trustee ever to sit on the Waterloo County Public School Board is first year St. Jerome's student Mark Weber. An entrance scholarship winner who attended St. Jerome's High School, he is a capable spokesperson, having honed his public speaking skills over the years as a participant in the annual high school debating tournament sponsored by the College.
