3 Dear St. Jerome's Graduate, Over the past several months, the SJC Graduates' Association Executive Committee has been exploring ways to expand its outreach to graduates and establish more direct ways in which it can provide service to current undergraduates. To this end, the Executive Committee embarked upon a strategic planning process, which involved a review of its principles and mission and a consideration of its future efforts. Throughout this planning process, one "theme" recurred continually: the fixation with work and employment in the contemporary world. From these discussions, it became apparent that issues such as "multi-skilling", "job-enlargement" and life-long learning are of interest and concern to graduates of today and to those of tomorrow. Given the prevalence of these topics throughout the planning process, the Graduates' Association Executive Committee has decided to undertake a three-year plan to focus its activities and efforts on the theme of work and career. With the increasing complexities of global economic structures and the related implications for the workforce of today and tomorrow, such a plan offers countless opportunities for the Association to provide service and outreach to St. Jerome's graduates and undergraduates alike. "The Plan," as it has become known to members of the Executive Committee, paints the picture of work and career in the broadest brush strokes possible. This means it recognizes that work and career issues go beyond job sharing or networking to encompass the numerous social and personal issues that are intimately tied to lifestyle. So in addition to obvious career-related concerns, we hope to explore such things as balancing work and family, volunteer labour, and the contemporary definition of success as part of our investigation of career and work in the 90s. Of course, some events -- for example, the "Stratford Excursion" have become something of a Graduates' Association tradition, so we'll continue to offer these in the spirit of St. Jerome's camaraderie. We'll be asking for your input, since each of you and your experience is our greatest resource. Over the next year, we will be establishing a career resource file, which will require the willingness of our graduates to share their skills, experience and advice with other grads and with those about to graduate into the work force. Watch Update! for more details. And watch Update! as well for a new feature that profiles grad careers, and for a column that shares tips for realizing both big successes and the everyday accomplishments that make for a job well done. This column will rely greatly on the knowledge you have gleaned on the job, so if you have some "tips of the trade," ideas about how to solve various problems, or stories of successful initiatives your company has undertaken, please share them with us. Send them to Update! so we can spread the news to other grads. We on the Executive Committee are excited at the prospect of moving ahead with this initiative. We hope that you find this venture equally exciting and worthwhile. Your feedback is important to us, so write us here at Update! As the family of St. Jerome's graduates prepares to welcome yet more new members, we'll continue our efforts to foster the ongoing relationship between graduates and the College.
