This issue includes articles on History Professor Ken McLaughlin and his new book, "Waterloo: The Unconventional Founding of an Unconventional University", the Message from the President (Doug Letson) regarding Canadian Catholic Colleges and Universities, on Eric McCormack being nominated for the Governor General's Award, Grail: An Ecumenical Journal again winning two awards, Peter Hinchcliffe, a member of the editorial board of 'The New Quarterly' announcing it had won the 1996 Gold Medal for fiction at the National Magazine Awards, the student recruitment campaign won two awards, and SJC Update won the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education silver medal for best newsletter, an item on the 13th Annual Graduates' Association lecture by Victor Malarek, an investigative reporter with the CBC, upcoming Centre for Catholic Experience lectures, Graduates' Day in Stratford, the publication of a book on Canadian poet Fred Wah by English professor Charlene Diehl-Jones, profiles on psychology professor Christopher Burris, associate chaplain Melinda Szilva, and mathematical professor Conrad Hewitt, an in-depth article on the newly restructured Board of Governors, In Memoriam for Colin Guthrie, Joan Harper Jonker, and Brenda McWilliams, upcoming grad events, and the feature "Class Notes".

St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
