Volume 26, Number 1 • Spring/Summer 2009 At the Premier's Innovation Awards 2009, Dr. Scott Vanstone, professor of Mathematics at St. Jerome's University and co-founder of Certicom Corp., received the Ontario government's $200,000 Catalyst award for Lifetime Leadership in Innovation. Certicom's Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) was described as "the technology of choice to secure all top-secret, mission-critical and sensitive data and communications ... from cell phones to smart cards, wireless emails to e-commerce." Vanstone also helped to create the Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research at the University of Waterloo. EE Times magazine, a leader in electronics and technology news and analysis, calls him one of the 25 greatest minds in the world. In recognition of this award Dr. Vanstone (right) is seen donating $100,000 to Dr. David Perrin, President and Vice Chancellor, towards SJU entrance scholarships. Congratulations Scott and thank you! P. Whitney Lackenbauer wins Donner Prize Dr. P. Whitney Lackenbauer of St. Jerome's University, along with three other authors, has won the coveted $35,000 Donner Prize, awarded to Canada's best public policy book, for Arctic Front: Defending Canada in the Far North (Thomas Allen Publishers). This important book examines the history and future of the Arctic and argues for urgent political and environmental action to protect its resources and establish sovereignty.
