Courses of Instruction. SPECIAL NOTICES. 1. All the classes except German, Polish and higher Mental Philosophy are taught in English, and the greatest attention is given to a thorough instruction in this all important language. 2. The Conversational Languages are English and German. 3. As the College is situated in a German district, and about one-half of the students being usually of German extraction, exceptional facilities for the acquisition of the German language are offered in this Institution. 4. The Program of Studies and the Regulations were successively approved of by the Right Rev. Bishops J. Farrell, D. D., J. Crinnon, D. D., J. J. Carbery, M. S. T., and T. J. Dowling, D. D., and by His Grace, the late Archbishop Lynch, to all of whom we are greatly indebted for very valuable advice and encouragement. The Studies embrace three courses: 1. THE COMMERCIAL, 2. THE CLASSICAL, 3. THE PHILOSOPHICAL. 1. THE COMMERCIAL COURSE. This Course gives to Students a splendid opportunity of acquiring a good English and Commercial education. It embraces : Bookkeeping, Commercial Arithmetic, Penmanship, English Reading and Spelling, Grammar, Composition, Business Papers, Letter-writing, History, Geography, Natural Sciences and Religion. Optional Studies in this Course are : German, French, Italian, Algebra, Geometry, Drawing, Shorthand, Typewriting, Instrumental Music. The opportunities offered in this Course for acquiring a thorough Business Education and modern Languages are unrivaled in this country. Commercial Diplomas are awarded to Students that have passed a satisfactory examination. The Commercial Course extends over two years as follows : First Year. English.--Reading and Spelling, Grammar, Exercises in Dictation and Letter-writing. Mathematics.--Commercial Arithmetic. Bookkeeping.--Single Entry, Business Papers, &c. Geography. Political and Physical. Penmanship.--Spencerian System. Sciences.--Elements of Physics and Physiology. History.--History of the United States, Outlines of Canadian history, Bible History. Religion.--Catechism DeHarbe. Second Year. English.--Grammar, Composition, Analysis, Synonyms. Mathematics.--Higher Commercial Arithmetic, Algebra. Book-keeping.--Double Entry etc. Penmanship.--Spencerian Special Course. Sciences.--Physics or Chemistry. History.--Universal History, Spalding's Church History. Religion.--Catechism DeHarbe concluded. 2. THE CLASSICAL COURSE. This Course is intended for Students preparing for the higher professional studies in Universities and especially for Theological Seminaries. It embraces Latin, Greek, the Modern Languages, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, History and all the other branches of a Complete Education. The Polish Students are taught a Special Course in the Polish Language, embracing Grammar, Letter-writing, Composition, Literature and History of Poland. German is obligatory for Students of German Parentage. French, Italian, Music, Drawing, Stenography and Typewriting are optional Studies. The Classical Course extends through a period of six years as follows : First Year:--Latin Elements. Latin. Grammar, Arnold's First Latin Book, short Extracts from Latin Authors.
