BIOGRAPHY

Norman L. Choate began his career at St. Jerome's in 1964 as a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology. He held this position until 1967. During this time he was Chair of the Colloquium Committee and Chair of the Student Awards Committee.

He served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954 and then entered college. He earned a B.A. (1958) from St. Mary's Seminary in St. Mary's, Kentucky, pursued further undergraduate work in Sociology at St. Louis University (1959-1963) while at the same time studying Theological Studies at St. John's Seminary in St. Louis (1959-1963). Norman Choate received an M.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from St. Louis University in 1964.

He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest as a member of the Congregation of the Resurrection in 1963 and then served at the University of Waterloo as the Newman Chaplain from 1965 to 1967.

After 1967 Fr. Choate served variously as a Parish Assistant, as the Parish Director of the High School C.C.D. program, as a Research Associate for the Centre for Applied Research in the Apostolate in Washington, D.C., becoming the Centre's Assistant Director in 1971 (until 1974).

Fr. Choate returned to St. Jerome's in 1975 as Campus Chaplain. He was appointed President of St. Jerome's in 1979 and served as President until 1989. After leaving St. Jerome's he was engaged in parish work in the United States.

St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
