- BIOGRAPHY
Professor Steven Furino taught in the Department of Mathematics at St. Jerome's from 1989 to 2008, specializing in combinatorics and optimization and computer science. He received a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Waterloo in 1982, an MMath in Combinatorics and Optimization from the University of Waterloo in 1987, and his Ph.D. in Combinatorics and Optimization, also from the University of Waterloo, in 1990.
Professor Furino served as a Visiting Scientist in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Suzhou, Suzhou, China and had a Cross Appointment to the University of Waterloo. In 1998 he was appointed to the Admissions Team for the Student Information Systems Project at the University of Waterloo; the system launched in December, 2000. Professor Furino was recognized for his teaching in 2007 as a Distinguished Teacher. In 1998 he had been awarded Instructor of the Year in the Faculty of Mathematics (University of Waterloo.) His academic research was funded twice by the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
Professor Furino served in several capacities while at St. Jerome's: as the Department of Mathematics Academic Advisor, and as its Chair; as President of the St. Jerome's Branch of the University of Waterloo Faculty Association; on the St. Jerome's Board of Governors; on the Presidential Search Committee; on the College Computing Committee; as an Ex-Officio member of the Academic Committee; on the Administrative Staff Review Committee; as the Faculty Representative for the Students' Union; on the Admissions Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics; as the Ph.D. Examination Chair for several departments; on the Standings and Promotions Committee; and he served in several roles for the University Catholic Community. Professor Furino also initiated and provided technical assistance for the development of a recruitment CD for the Registrar's Office and created software for both the Development Office and the Registrar's Office.
Community involvement included being a consultant to the Catholic University of Canada Project, a member of the Finance and Maintenance Committee for the Beaver Creek Housing Co-Operative, a Coordinator (Judge) for the International Mathematics Olympiad, a member of the Board of Directors for the Kitchener-Waterloo Field Naturalists, and coached for Waterloo Minor Baseball and Waterloo Youth Basketball.
Professor Furino has authored a book, chapters in books, refereed journal papers, technical papers, and conference/seminar papers.

St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
