BIOGRAPHY
Professor John A. Loftus came to St. Jerome's in 1994 to teach as a member of the Psychology Department. He was also the first occupant of the John J. Wintermeyer Chair which was established in honor of the Kitchener lawyer, leader of the Ontario Liberal party (1957-1963), and long-standing friend of St. Jerome's, John Joseph Wintermeyer. The Chair was created to allow a prominent scholar to explore topics of importance to the Church in the contemporary world. His areas of specialization were psychopathology, psychology of religious experience, and human sexuality. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology of Religion from Boston University in 1983.
Prior to coming to St. Jerome's Professor Loftus was the Executive Director of Southdown (Emmanuel Convalescent foundation), a private hospital for religious professionals in need of emotional or spiritual care. He had also worked in Campus Ministry as an undergraduate and taught as a sessional lecturer as a graduate student. He has been widely-known for his role as a principal advisor to many church groups throughout the world on cases of sexual abuse by clergy or within a religious context.
During his time at St. Jerome's Professor Loftus gave the St. Jerome's Graduates Association lecture (1995), served as the Director of the St. Jerome's Centre for Catholic Experience, and was a member of the editorial board of "Grail: An Ecumenical Journal" which was founded at St. Jerome's.
He gave numerous key note speeches and addresses, adult education seminars and week-long gatherings for religious. He has also been interviewed by various television outlets in Canada and the United States and has been a board member, convenor or presenter for many organizations. Prof. Loftus has also edited, published or wrote for several journals.
He left St. Jerome's in 1998 to assume the Presidency of Regis College in Toronto, Ontario.- Notes

St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
