BIOGRAPHY:

Professor Mary T. Malone joined the faculty of the Department of Religious Studies in 1987. She formally retired in 1996 but returned as a sessional professor for the 1997 winter term. Of special interest to her was the role of women in the Church.


Previous to coming to St. Jerome's she was an Assistant Professor of Catechetics and Church History at St. Augustine Seminary and the Toronto School of Theology (1977-1987). She received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1971. A foremost church historian, catechist, and popular public speaker, Professor Malone also published widely, both books and journal articles. She was one of four presenters to the Watson Committee on Religion in the Public Schools of Ontario, was involved in religious education for teachers, served as the President of the Archdiocese of Toronto Liturgical Council, and was a member of the Canadian Bishops' Task Force on Women in the Canadian church. In 1984 she received the Catholic Religious Education Consultants of Ontario Award.

At St. Jerome's Professor Malone was appointed Director of the St. Jerome's Centre for Catholic Experience (1990), gave the 1991 Graduates' Association Lecture, earned the Distinguished Teacher Award in 1992, chaired the Department of Religious Studies (1995-1996), gave the 1993 University of Waterloo Arts Lecture, facilitated a Women's Weekend Retreat called "Roots and Visions (1993), gave one of Renison College's St. Bede lectures in 1996, and was a member of the Editorial Board of "Grail: An Ecumenical Journal". "Leaving Home: Finding a Voice" was her farewell lecture in 1998 at Wilfred Laurier University before leaving Canada to return to her native Ireland.

St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
