BIOGRAPHY

After completing his Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of British Columbia (1970), Professor Mitsuru Shimpo joined the faculty in the Department of Sociology at St. Jerome's in 1971. While on the faculty he served as the department's Academic Advisor or as the Alternate Advisor.

Professor Shimpo worked extensively on research into native education in the Canadian north becoming a leading expert on the subject. He completed a major survey of Dene education in 1990 in connection with the Dene Cultural Institute in Yellowknife, N.W.T. He also wrote a college text based on a correspondence course he taught entitled "Social Change in Canada". He received the inaugural Canadian Prime Minister's Award in Publishing in 1989 for the book.

Professor Shimpo retired from St. Jerome's in 1991.

St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
