BIOGRAPHY
Professor Gerald J. Stortz joined the faculty of the History Department at St. Jerome's in 1985. He specialized in Canadian Religious History with a particular emphasis on the Roman Catholic Church and he also had an interest in Canadian working class history and immigration history. Professor Stortz earned his B.A. and M.A., both in History, from the University of Waterloo and received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Guelph in 1980. He served as the Department Chair for many years and was a member of the editorial board for "Grail: An Ecumenical Journal".
Professor Stortz wrote numerous journal articles, reviews and conference papers in addition to co-editing, with Terence Murphy, the book "Creed and Culture" The Place of English-speaking Catholics in Canadian Society" (1993) and co-authoring, with Kenneth McLaughlin and James Wahl, C.R., the book "Enthusiasm for the Truth: An Illustrated History of St. Jerome's University" (2002).
He was a member of the Canadian Historical Society, the Canadian Catholic Historical Society (also serving as its President), the Canadian Society for Church History, the Society for Canada's National History, the Guelph Historical Society, Osgoode Society for Legal History, the Waterloo Heritage Foundation, and Guelph Museums Board of Management.

St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
