BIOGRAPHY
Scott Vanstone studied at the University of Waterloo as an undergraduate and graduate student earning his B. Math, his M. Math, and his Ph.D. (1974) in Combinatorics and Optimization. He joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at St. Jerome's in 1974 and later was cross-appointed to the Combinatorics and Optimization department at the University of Waterloo.
During his years on campus, Professor Vanstone chaired the department of Mathematics at St. Jerome's, chaired St. Jerome's College Council, and supervised several Ph.D. students. He gave many guest lectures, published numerous research papers and several books.
He co-founded the University of Waterloo's cybersecurity company, Certicom, in 1985 (formerly Cryptech, then Mobius Enryption) and served as its Chief Cryptographer until the company was sold to Research in Motion in 2009. He was the first holder of the newly-created Mobius Chair in Cryptography in 1995, consulted for the Department of Communication and the Communications Research Centre in Ottawa, co-founded the Data Encryption Group at University of Waterloo which evolved into the Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research (1998) and served as its Executive Director,and was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Designs, Codes and Cryptography" from 1990 to 1999. Professor Vanstone also co-founded the annual workshop on Elliptic Curve Cryptography in 1997, served on the Board of Director of the International Association for Cryptographic Research and was elected a Fellow of the organization in 2011. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Academy of Sciences.

Award for Excellence in Research, University of Waterloo, 2004;
Award for Mathematics from RSA Security;
Catalyst Award for Lifetime Achievement in Innovation from the Premier of Ontario, 2009;
Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, 2010;
Vanstone Lecture Hall in the new academic building at St. Jerome's was named in his honour, 2016.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The records for Professor Scott Vanstone include a copy of his curriculum vita, a copy of the Course Notes for Introductory Concepts of Optimization which he co-authored with R.G. St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
