Church will seek housing Although it's still in its early stages, the plan would see a 100- unit apartment building go up on the church's parking lot at Weston Road and King Street, with a minimum 40 per cent subsidized rental units. All units would be self- contained, with accommoda- tion ranging from bachelor to two-bedroom. Meals would be served in a dining room in a main common area. Central United is just one of "many churches working toward finding affordable hous- ing," he said. "lt's the idea that if there is a need there, then the church as a member of the community should try to satisfy that need," said Orlon Hall, chairman of the seniors' residence commit- tee. Hall said the project is the result of investigations over the last three years of uses for the church property. The church decided to go ahead when a lease for parking space held by the neighboring Steinberg) and Shoppers Drug Mart expired. Linc stops in at St. David's Following worship, His Honor met and shook hands with everyone who had come to church. Just before cut- ting a large "birthday cake," made especially for the occa- sion by Dorothy Smythe, the Lieutenant Governor gave a brief address in which he reminded his listeners of his role in parliamentary demo- cracy modelled on the British system. Everyone was very pleased with the friendliness of the special guest as he As the party entered the church, the organ played the Vice-Regal Salute and the people stood in honor of the Queen's representative in Ontario. His Honor read the first lesson, and the rest of the service was as usual in St. David's, although with more people in attendance than usual! To help celebrate the 39th anniversary of their parish, the people of St. David's Church on Lawrence Avenue at Jane invited His Honor, Lincoln Alexander, Lieute- nant Governor of Ontario, to be present at the Sunday Eucharist on Feb. 28. The rector of St. David's, Father Tom Little, met the Vice-Regal party as it arrived at the church. Fr. Little then presented the two chur- chwardens, Bill LeGrow and Bill Mores. With His Honor was his aide de Camp, Major John Duffy, and his wife Elaine. The special service was part of the Patronal Festival, with March 1 being St. David's Day. March 1988 Humber Valley Villager The residence committee is asking Weston seniors and han- dicapped adults to fill out a questionnaire by March 31, available at the church, that will help identify the need in the area. Questions include income and current living arrange- ments. Hall stresses that the ques- tionnaire is not an application for residence. Should the idea prove favorable, survey respon- dents will be contacted to see if Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor Lincoln Alexander is greeted by St. David's rector Tom Little and the church wardens, Bill LeGrow and Bill Mores. Alexander stopped by to help the parish celebrate its 39th year. Photo by Chris Childs moved about the crowd speaking to people. In his sermon, Fr. He said that 242-7026 God continues to make saints in our day and that this is the vocation of every Christian. St. David’s parish grew out of the old Hardington mission of St. John's Chur- ch, Weston. Prior to its es- tablishment as an independent congregation, it met in a small schoolhouse which still serves as a day- care centre today. The pre- sent St. David's Church was built in l953. As part of the world-wide Anglican Communion, the Anglican church in this city welcomes people of many na- tional and racial back- grounds. St. David's itself is known as a congregation with heart and does a signifi- cant job of outreach to the community. I Submitted by Father Tom Little, St, David 's Lawrence A venue. It is not entirely clear why the name St. David's was chosen for the young subur- ban congregation in the fif- ties. It may simply have been that it sounded like a good name. There appears not to have been a significant number of Welsh people in the congregation, although it is not unusual to find people from the Church in Wales in any Anglican congregation. There are three other dedica- tions to St. David's in the Di- ocese of Toronto. Those involved in planning for the Patronal Festival at St. David's this year were: Alf Preston, Margaret Con- die, and Janet Jacks. Many more were involved in mak- ing sandwiches and pouring tea.
