Sabatino‘s does not offer typical Eglinton Ave. fare or typical Eglinton Ave. service. Trim waiters, all sporting tuxâ€" edos, were buzzing about tenâ€" ding to our needs and putting the finishing touches of the other tables. We were quite early for a Saturday night but it was not long before each of the Wind whipping our faces, snow swirling about our feet, we marched along Eglinton Ave. to 1144, our destination, Sabatino‘s Dining Lounge. Warm windows and a stylish awning greeted us as Sabatino‘s came into view. A tuxedoed maitreâ€"d took or coats and found us a comfortable table in the back of the mirrored, brass trimed hideaway. By Lori Bonnor In a city that has more restaurants per_â€" capita than almost any other, it would seem difficult to introduce a completely new taste sensaâ€" tion. The Lo family, however, have suceeded in doing just that. Their new family restaurant, located at Bloor and Christie, brings to Toronto the unique dish â€" Satay. By Shelley Ambrose Satay is a South East Asian dish brought by Kevin Lo and his three brothers from their native Indonesia. Lo states that the idea of opening a restaurant stemmed from their desire to add to Toronto cuisine, and to somehow make a contribution to the community. Their restaurant offers a mixture of Inâ€" donesian and Thai cuisine. Their specialty, however, is satay. ’...‘..Q..................Q....O....A..... We settlâ€" ed for the reasonably priced white house wine, Cambelana, which complimented our meal beautifully. From the menu we selected Caesar Salad and an appetizer size of Linguini al Pesto. Pastas can be ordered in meal sizes or appetizer sizes. Both were delightful, the Caesar lightly neatly set tablesâ€"green linen clothes and white napkins, imâ€" maculate silver and white acâ€" cent dishesâ€"were all occupied and the room buzzed with friendly conversation. Also offered are lamb satay â€"served with sweet soya sauce, and fish or shrimp satay served witha spicy toamto sauce. Perhaps as enjoyable as eating these tidbits is the way they are served. Although already cookâ€" ed the skewers are brought to each table with a small barbecue. Satay is marinated meat on a skewer and is served with dipâ€" pig sauces. The Lo‘s offer 12 varieties of satay including pork, chicken and beef prepared with coconut, or corâ€" iander (a Chinese parsley herb) or in their special blend of herbs and spices. These morsels are served with a uniâ€" que and delicius peanut sauce taken from their grandmother‘s own recipe. The waiters checked often to see if everything was to our satisfaction and to refill our cofâ€" fee. Even though every table was occupied. they. were not rushed or flustered and nothing took longer than you expected or wanted. Reluctantly we prepared to reâ€"enter the night. We got our coats from the cloak room just off the lobby where guests were lounging on couches and at the bar waiting for tables. Comfortable and sated we inâ€" dulged in Strawberry Flan and delicious coffee. Nibbling fresh strawberries with a light glaze and cakeâ€"crust seemed to be the perfect counterâ€"attack to the blustery evening we would allâ€"toâ€"soon have to face. The menu offered a good selection, Dover Sole in White Wine Sauce, Veal Scalopini and only one steak, Bisteccadi Mazo al Pepeâ€"Pepper Steak. The Specialita del Giorno, which the adjacent table were feasting upon, looked specâ€" tacular, three perfectly golden quail nestled on a bed of rice and golden, lightly sauced monk fish. â€" meal brought back fond memories of sunbaked sand and long mediterranean days. The Petto di Pollo al pernod carried a hint of le frangaise; a delicate pernod sauce smotherâ€" ing tender breast of chicken. The vegetables, served on side dishes were done to perfection spiced and the pasta al dente with basil sauce. Steaming bread with a hint of garlic acâ€" companied the appetizers. The waiters were ever present, not imposing, but we had only to think of something, a glance, and they were there. On piping hot plates, our meals, arrived. The last time 1 had Fritto di Gamberi e Calamari, deep fried shrimp and squid, was in Ibizza. The The restaurant seats 52 and is simply decorated with original batiks from Indonesia and silk flowers from Singapore. The service is friendly and they even take time to show you how to properly use your chopsticks or unskewer your satay.
