Mom and my sister Mary Jane and I used to make gingerbread boys for our school classes and for the Sunday School at Westminster United Church. We'd get a production line going. Mom rolling them out and we girls decorating. We used tiny silver balls for the eyes, slivered candied red cherries for the mouths and three raisins for the buttons. Each cookie was carefully handled for fear of broken legs and necks which were gobbled up by my Dad. Shortbreads were made on another day. Mom would roll them out once again and we would make our favourite shapes. We'dturn out bells, stars and trees all decorated with coloured sugar and sprinkles. Sometimes, I'd break one on purpose just to taste. Mom always made Christmas fruit cake and Christmas pudding. We'dall have a stir of the pudding for good luck for the coming year but it was a long time before I really liked to have a decent sized piece but the brown sugar sauce was "m m" good. A real treat for Mary Jane and I was a day off school about two weeks before the holidays. There was a Sunday School Concert for me too. One year we sang, "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly", and walked down the centre aisle with a candle in a holder in our hand. The lights were out and the church was decorated for the holiday season and I remember thinking how beautiful God must have thought His Home looked that night. Santa always visited the party after the concert and if you really looked very hard you could figure out who was behind the cotton batten beard. Jean Harper would play the piano and there was always a school choir that performed several numbers. At the end of the evening, our parents joined us in several of the old familiar carols and then our classrooms would be open for all to see. It was a very special night when evervone had a smile on their faces and any little incidents in the classroom were forgotten. I was frequently in hot water in school, nothing bad, but I was always relieved when the teacher was silent. The windows at Eaton's and Simpson's department stores would be the first stop. They were enchanting and it took a long time to see all of the little figures in the scenes. One year it was a forest animal theme. There were animals skating and tobogganing and making snowmen. It was delightful! Then it was time to meet my Dad for lunch in the Eaton's cafeteria where I always had macaroni and cheese, chocolate cake and pop. Toyland and a ride on the train came next. The best was saved for last and that was a visit with Santa. Our tree always came from our own property. It was usually a spruce covered with cones that would pop open when the tree warmed up in the house. Daddy would set it in a pail of stones and water and it would stay fresh for ages, (one year we put hearts all over it for Valentines Day). Our tree had little tiny lights that looked like stars that Daddy made from some signals at the Bell where he worked and we had a lot of decorations that came from my grandparents home that were made out of pipe cleaners and peanuts and tinsel. Presents were never made a whole lot of but friends and family and carol nights were a big part of our holiday season. One year I remember the Salvation Army playing under the street light on our street and all of us grabbing our coats and boots and standing in the snow with our neighbours listening to that heavenly music. We in the Weston Historical Society would like to invite you to our annual Christmas Hymn and Carol Sing, It will be held Wednesday, December 7, 1994 at 8 o'clock at the Weston Pentecostal Church, on Weston Road just south of Lawrence on the east side, (the old Biltmore Theatre). Everyone is welcome! There is parking in the back. The Weston Silver Band will play and refreshments will be served. Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season to all!
