At that time, it was decided to build a new Sunday School on Main Street, opposite the Baptist Church. The building was dedicated March IO, 1912. March 1913, at a church meeting, the In 1907, the Baptists bought land on Main Street South. For a short time their meetings were held in a tent. The first sod for their new church was turned August, 1908. The building was ready by November ,1908 and they are celebrating 90 years in 1998. In similar fashion, a little frame Methodist Episcopal church was built on Church Street. It still stands today but in disguise. The Wesleyan Methodist and Methodist Episcopal churches merged in 1884 and in 1887 the "Church on Church Street" was sold to the Odd Fellows Lodge, bricked over and a second storey added. The Presbyterians formed a small congregation in 1847, and held their meetings in the Methodist Episcopal Church until they were able to build their own church around the corner on Cross Street. This year they celebrate 150 years. St. John's Anglican Church dates it congregation from 1856, when Father Johnson was appointed Rector of St. Philips Anglican Church. Father Johnson bought land in Weston, built a rectory and a "chapel of ease", a small frame church, on Rectory Road. In 1894, the "chapel of ease" was moved from Rectory Road to its present location on Weston Road and was bricked over. 1996 commemorated 140 years. In Weston, in 1821, the widow of Benjamin Davis, a blacksmith who had been granted the land in the heart of Weston, donated land for a Wesleyan Methodist Church (Central United Church). Two millers, Michael Miller and James Farr were among the Trustees. The congregation celebrated 175 years last year. About the same time, in 1848 the Roman Catholic families in the area were meeting and 1853 saw the erection of their own church, St. John the Evangelist, on George Street. Next year will be their 150th anniversary. Church meetings were first held in homes and as the numbers of a congregation grew it could apply to be part of a preachers circuit. The more prosperous of their membership gave land and the first church buildings were erected. The Villiage of Weston is steeped in time and the roots can be traced back to the Churches, many of them celebrating historic anniversaries! The first settlers in Weston brought not only their skills and will to succeed but also their faith. Their church was the focus of inspiration and consolation. It was also the focus of social life in what was for most, a lonely and hard existence. "HOME OF THE BICYCLE my: $9 is Co h an!
