IRWIN LYON LINDSEY JoHN, PYTLER [ The vote on the byâ€"law submitted for the assent of the ratepayers, and proposi to nt a bonus in aid of the pmpctzï¬ athion ‘of the Toronto Suburban Railâ€" way to the extreme north of the Village, was defeated on Monday last bg a vote of 66 to 58. It is supposed the natives imagine that if the bonus for $5,000, to be mï¬ on in York Tovmhi{ on the 12th x., carries that they will get all the C:eflt of electric railway communication with the city without themselves paying any taxes on gccount of it and to a t extent at the expense of their more pg‘l"o?c spirited rural neighbors. That remains to h.a.-‘lemtl‘c. \ We take the following from the press in reference to the late vote on the railway by law : is well enough and is bound to sucâ€" ceed in spite of those whose interests it is, apparently, to keep it back. One hundred acres of land or more will be offered for sale this faH, part of it in lots in the limits of the village and the balance on the outakirte, . Is‘ it not reasongble to suppose that} people would be inclined to come here and purchase building lots to build thereon. People who do.businéss in the city wishing to live in a suburb, nealthy and clean as this is, and yet there are people so blind to their own interests and to the interest and prosâ€" perity of the.place that they oppose all progress, because forsooth they are asked. to assist to the extent of a dollar and a halfa year extra taxes, forgetting that the hand that pays out this small amount will reap a benefit fourâ€"fold over. Is it not alâ€" most enough for those who have enterprise in their composition to| gather up their beds and walk to some other place more congenial and enterâ€" prising, and leave their less progresâ€"| sive friends to the bats and owls. We. take the following from the| Tribune of last week :â€" " To a Tribune reportst Squire Cruickâ€" shank expressed satisfaction at the defeat | of the bonus byâ€"law, He said that most | of the business men were opposed to it and with a couple of exceptions employers of ; labor voted against it." 4 Although the voting was by ballot he scems to know how the cross was made. We may say we are glad to be named, among the exceptions, ‘ The Holley property at the west end was being surveyed the other day ‘in advance to its being offered for sale. â€" Theâ€" question very properly comres in, would it not have been a great conveniente and a great l]lelp to ‘this place if the railway was in existence and running to the west end. â€" Here is this village of ours that we are continually found fault with by one and another by saying to us "you are running this village down by your comments upon this thing and the other." We weply. to these people who so talk, we are not run: ning the village down. The village We think in any agreement made in future with the Electric Company the lighting of the town should also be considered, We believe the comâ€" pany would be willing to grant 8 or 10 electricâ€"lights in connection with the bonus for the railway at $50 per year per light, to be lighted say 200 nights per year. The Patrons of Industry of the West Riding of York mbt yesterday in the Eagle hall for the purpose of nominatâ€" | ing a candidate for the House of Com: mons, to the number of thirty. It was near three o‘clock before business commenced. â€" Mr. W.â€"Câ€" Grubb â€"was moved to the chair and Mr. R. L. Several resolutions were moved and seconded and finally it was resolved to ask strangers to retire during the private part of the business, to be perâ€" imitted ‘to enter later on. Reporters for the following papers were repreâ€" sented :â€"World, Mail, Star, Tripune; and Tr®s, of Weston. One hour after waiting admission they were alâ€" lowed, when considerable discussion followed, which was entered into by Mr. John Brown, of Toronto, Mr. R. L. Crawford, of Richview, Mr. John A. Macdonald, of Mount Dennis, Mr W. Clark, of Pairbank, Mr. IGge, of Islingtomi, Mr. Watson, of Vaughan, and others. . The name of Mr. Brown, of Toronto, was moyed by Mr. R. L. Crawford, to stand as a candidate‘to represent the Patrons of Industry in the House of Commons, which. was not seconded. _ Mr. Brown was not favorably reccived, we presume on account of his belonging to Toronto. Mr. Brown made a thrilling, address during the afternoon, upon some member â€"wishing a postponement of the proceeding in consequence of the number being small and ho represenâ€" tative beingâ€" present from the Grand Association. It was finally decided to proceed with the business and the name of John A. Macdonald was moved, and seconded, also the name of Councillor Waston, of Vaughan. Both these gentlemen refused the nominaâ€" {tion. Mr. Crawford objected to the adjournment on the ground that the revising of the voters‘ lists required to be attended to and whoever the canâ€" didate was, he should give his attenâ€" tion to this part of the business and further, no doubt, the Grand Associaâ€" tion would assist financidlly in aid of any candidato who might accept the nomination, ‘as the expense "to contest a constituency like West York would be large.
