_ Page‘4 â€"â€" THE WESTON TIMES â€" Thursday, June 3, 1965 Bafety Councils and police deâ€" partments are forever telling people to drive at sensible speeds which are determined by traffic, weather and road conditions. However, it is a not too uncomâ€" mon occurrence to read in the mornâ€" ing paper of some teenager who has been fatally injured while being chaâ€" sed by the police. It is usually found that the fresh statistic lying in the morgue failed to stop for police beâ€" cause he had stolen the car or had been drinking. The police take up the chase often at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour to catch a petty crook. Do poli¢e start firiny volvers at drunks on streets or shoplifters? The driver who fails to abuie by the law and stop when police request If Roy Culpeper had been in the House of Commons during the great flag debate of 1964, a prolonged ‘deâ€" bate might have been shortened. Mr. Culpeper, a grade 13 studâ€" ent at Weston Collegiate and Vocaâ€" tional School has surely dispelled the picture held by some that the MP‘s 20 years from now will be riding up Parliament Hill on motor cycles with his speech to the students at WCVS. About this time every year (and even earlier for university students) a large number of people wonder why there are examinations, what they prove, and what the alternative Both the distraught parents who have to deal with overâ€"tired and irâ€" ritable children and the students themselves who must sit and sweatl over mostly outâ€"dated, biased textâ€" books that are crammed with errors and irrelevancies must put up with it. Why do educational institutions continue to have examinations? It is their admission of defeat. They canâ€" not possibly take the time to individâ€" ually assess each students capabiliâ€" ties, potentiality, interests and emoâ€" tions. Exams are the IBM machines of education whereby a person who has the potential to do anything but write exams becomes a social outâ€" cast. It is the educators‘ way of sayâ€" ing term papers are a bother to mark so regurgitate in a true or false manâ€" ner a group of inconsequential and rather useless material that has been thrown at you for eight months. Edâ€" ucators do not have the time to bothâ€" er about people. The most important invention in the world‘s history was probably the wheel. It has been implemented in millions of ways. _ In the twentieth century the wheel of commerce has become the wheel of a truck. It is sometimes inâ€" credible to believe that the trucking business keeps rolling. Piloting upwards of forty tons some truck drivers feel they have a passport to ¢areen around the highâ€" ways and biways like powerâ€"craziy Published at 2159 â€"Weston Rd., Weston by Principal Publishing Ltd., every Thursday V. But to use the automobile, a weapon every bit as lethal as a gun, to achieve this end is not the way to do it. The seared driver is the last perâ€" son that should be driving on city and suburban streets at speeds in exâ€" cess of 50 mileg per hour. The police with their present policy are aiding and abetting this practice. With modâ€" ern, highâ€"speed communications, and the technical skill now available for police work, the practice of murderâ€" ing unconvicted offenders should be ceased. Is it necessury for a sidewalk full of pedestrians to be splattered on the pavement before new measâ€" ures are brought in? The police should practice what they preach and drive at speeds determined by traffic weather and coad conditions. He hits the nail on the head when he states: ‘"The dignity conferâ€" red on the flag comes from us, the Canadian people: the flag itself does not confer any dignity â€" â€" does it matâ€" ter what design the flag has taken?" Mr. Culpeper has distinguished both himself and his school for his words of wisdom. Canada and the world waita for the Culpepers to take their rightful place. to the individual that once school days have terminated and there are no more exams to write he or she is still faced with the problem of mass production where nobody cares about your potential a« long as you turn the piece of steel handed to you into a bolt, or transform a letter from tape onto paper. And this is what mic.s exams such a good thing. It is a forewarning Examinations in themselves are useless. â€" Educational â€" administrators say no better solution has been found to the grading of students. What they are in fact saying is that if the individual student is noet given a set of marks he does not know his capâ€" ability. Why then do they say that the person who cheats ig only cheatâ€" ing himself? This is indeed a curious anomoly. Except for the fact that cheatâ€" ing is morally dishonest it would serve education officials right if evâ€" ery student cheated their way to perâ€" fect exams. This would force the exâ€" am issue to a head. It has« often been stated that the best university is the one which has the fewest exams. all truck drivers in this category. There femain on the roads some of the most polite, courteou«s and helpâ€" ful men. There are occasionally signs of oldâ€"fashioned chivalry when one sees a truck driver helping with a flat tire. But it i« all too rare a scene. What the compay may lose in time by having their drivers perform such a service they gain tenâ€"fold in pubâ€" lie relationa. The â€"drivers behind the big wheel that act in the manner of a boor would be well advised to reassâ€" easa their thinking.
